According to one embodiment of the invention, an apparatus comprises a passive cooling system (130) and a portion of an air vehicle (120) which receives thermal energy. The passive cooling system (130) is disposed adjacent the portion of the air vehicle (120) and comprises a fluid transfer chamber (132). A fluid transfer element (136) and a coolant (138) are disposed within the fluid transfer chamber (132). The fluid transfer element (136) wicks a portion of the coolant (138) towards the portion of the air vehicle (120). The portion of the coolant (138) wicked towards the portion of the air vehicle (120) absorb at least a portion of the thermal energy in a boiling heat transfer.
