The present invention provides graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) and a composite nanomaterial formed by the GOQDs with graphene and/or graphene-like structure(s), as well as methods for preparing them. The method for preparing the GOQDs comprises providing a carbon-based 3D bulk material having a graphite layer structure as an anode, positioning an end face of the material in contact and parallel with the liquid surface of an electrolyte solution, and intermittently or continuously cutting and exfoliating graphite layers at the end face by electrochemical oxidation to obtain GOQDs. The method for preparing the composite material formed by GOQDs with graphene and/or graphene-like structure(s) comprises adding powder comprising graphite and/or graphite-like layer structure(s) to a solution of GOQDs; under an assistant mechanical action of high shearing force, subjecting the GOQDs adsorbed onto the graphite and/or graphite-like layer structure(s) in the solution to a cycle of exfoliation, re-adsorption, and re-exfoliation, to obtain a composite nanomaterial formed by quasi-zero and/or quasi-two dimensional graphene and/or graphene-like structure(s) and GOQDs.

A method for making a core/graphene-based shell structure can include obtaining a composition that includes core nano- or microstructures and graphene-based structures having at least a portion of a surface coated with a curable organic material, where the core nano- or microstructures and graphene-based structures are dispersed throughout the composition and subjecting the composition to conditions that cure the organic material and allow the graphene-based structures to self-assemble around the core nano- or microstructures to produce a core/graphene-based shell structure that has a graphene-based shell encompassing a core nano- or microstructure.

Graphene oxide (GO) is an emerging material for energy, environmental, and many other applications which in the past has been produced using chemical processes involving high-energy consumption and hazardous chemicals. Embodiments of the present invention focus on bioelectrochemical systems (BES) having microorganism(s), an anode (11) and cathode (14) to produce GO (13) from graphite, coal, and other carbonaceous materials under ambient conditions without chemical amendments. In some embodiments, value-added organic compounds (17) and even H2 (16) can be produced.

This can be a method of making a high strength composite reinforcing fiber using flat GO flakes coated on a conventional reinforcing fiber. This maintains some the flexibility of the fiber and aligns the flat graphene flakes along the surface of the fiber; this dramatically increases the strength of the fiber. It also allows bonding between overlapping flakes, in contrast to flakes being uniformly dispersed in a host material that is being reinforced and dramatically increases the strength of the host material.
