A method of producing a single-phase composition Mn+1AzXn, where n lies within a range of 0.8-3.2, where z lies within a range of 0.8-1.2, where M is at least one metal taken from the group of metals Ti (titanium), Sc (scandium), V (vanadium), Cr (chromium), Zr (zirconium), Nb (niobium) and Ta (tantalium), and where X is at least one of the non-metals C (carbon) and N (nitrogen) and where A is at least one of the chemical elements Si (silicon), Al (aluminium) and Sn (tin) or a compound of said elements such that the final, desired compound will include the components Mn+1AzXn, wherein the method also comprises forming a powder mixture from said metal, non-metal and said chemical element or compound of said elements, and igniting said powder mixture under an inert atmosphere so as to prevent promotion of dissociation, wherewith the components react. The method is characterised by keeping the reaction temperature at or above the temperature at which components are caused to react but beneath the temperature at which the single-phase composition dissociates.The invention relates primarily to the production of the single-phase material Ti3SiC2.

A process and powder mixture are provided for the ceramic welding repair of electrocast refractory oxide materials, such as those used in parts of glassmaking and metallurgical furnaces exposed to severe high temperature conditions. The powder mixture, which is to be projected in an oxygen gas stream against a refractory surface to be repaired, comprises combustible particles such as aluminium and silicon and refractory oxide particles plus at least one constituent, for example sodium carbonate and/or excess silica, which produces a vitreous phase in the repair mass, thereby enhancing the bond between the repaired refractory material and the repair mass.

A carbon containing material for use in particular as an anode of electrolytic cells for the production of aluminium by the electrolysis of alumina in a cryolite-based electrolyte, consists substantially of a mixture of one or more particulate carbonaceous material(s) with a binder based on compounds of aluminium with carbon, oxygen and/or nitrogen, such as aluminium carbide or aluminium oxycarbide, or such compounds mixed with aluminium. This binder is obtained by mixing the particulate carbonaceous material(s) with particulate aluminium and with at least one compound of aluminium, lithium, cerium, calcium and sodium in a liquid carrier, and heat treating to form the binder. The liquid carrier may comprise a binding agent selected from methyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and colloidal suspensions, in particular colloidal alumina.

The invention concerns the use of a reactive refractory mortar which is self-extinguishing beyond a predetermined penetration depth. The mortar consists of a mixture of 11 to 17 dry wt % aluminium powder, 18 to 31 dry wt % iron oxide, 8 to 18 dry wt % magnesium sulphate dissolved in water and 44 to 60 dry wt % magnesium oxide. The mortar is used for pointing refractory kiln linings consisting of refractory bricks, in particular for rotary kilns.
