The present invention is directed to methods for making metal oxide compositions, specifically, metal oxide compositions having high surface area, high metal/metal oxide content, and/or thermal stability with inexpensive and easy to handle materials. In one embodiment, the present invention is directed to methods of making metal and/or metal oxide compositions, such as supported or unsupported catalysts. The method includes combining a metal precursor with an organic acid to form a mixture and calcining the mixture for a period of time sufficient to form a metal oxide material.

Compounds and pharmaceutical compositions for use in the treatment and/or prophylaxis of cartilage and/or bone conditions and for methods of treating such conditions. The compounds are salts of strontium that have a water-solubility of from about 1 g/l to about 100 g/l at room temperature, especially amino acid salts of strontium or dicarboxylic acid salts of strontium. Examples of novel water-soluble strontium salts are e.g. strontium glutamate and strontium alpha-ketoglutarate. The present invention also relates to an improved method for preparing the strontium salt of glutamic acid.

The invention relates to the production of glyceric acid compounds of general formula (I): R1R2C(OH)-CR3(OH)-COOX, wherein R1, R2 independently represent hydrogen, C¿1-12?-alkyl, C6-12-aryl, C7-13-alkaryl or C7-13-aralkyl and X represents hydrogen, alkali, alkaline earth/2 or NH4, by saponification of glyceric acid compounds of formula (II), wherein Y represents NH2 or OR?4 with R4 C¿1-12-alkyl or C7-13-aralkyl with ring-opening addition of water to the epoxy ring. Preferably, Y represents NH2 and the glyceric acid used, corresponding to general formula (II) is produced by reacting acrylnitrile of general formula (III): R?1R2C=CR3¿CN with hydrogen peroxide.
