Creping adhesives and methods for making and using same are provided. The creping adhesive can include a first thermosetting polyamidoamine-epihalohydrin resin that includes a reaction product of a first epihalohydrin and a first polyamidoamine containing one or more secondary amine groups, a first thermoplastic polyamidoamine-epihalohydrin resin that includes a reaction product of a second epihalohydrin and a second polyamidoamine containing one or more secondary amine groups, and one or more re-wetting agents. The first thermosetting polyamidoamine-epihalohydrin resin can have a weight average molecular weight of about 800,000 to about 1,200,000 and a molar ratio of the first epihalohydrin to the secondary amine groups of about 0.002:1 to about 0.1:1. The first thermoplastic polyamidoamine-epihalohydrin resin can have a weight average molecular weight of about 40,000 to about 200,000 and a molar ratio of the second epihalohydrin to the secondary amine groups of about 0.001:1 to about 0.1:1.

The wet strengthened fiber product can include a fiber web and an at least partially cured wet strengthening resin, which prior to at least partially curing, the wet strengthening resin can include a polyamide-epihalohydrin (PAE) resin and a cationic styrene maleimide (SMI) resin. The PAE resin can include a reaction product of a polyamidoamine and an epihalohydrin and the cationic SMI resin can include a reaction product of a styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymer and an amine. The wet strengthened fiber product can include the wet strengthening resin in an amount of about 0.05 wt % to about 5 wt %, based on a dried weight of the wet strengthened fiber product.

The invention provides a composition of matter used to produce very soft high grades of tissue paper. The composition of matter comprises a PAE resin acidified with a multifunctional acid. The multifunctional acid includes but is not limited to carboxyl and sulfonyl. The acid has a functional group selected from carboxyl and sulfonyl and a functional group selected from carboxyl, sulfonyl, hydroxyl, lactone, phenol, amine and heterocycle. The PAE resin facilitates the use of an adhesive in a Yankee Dryer apparatus that is durable when the adhesive is wet but remains soft when the adhesive becomes dry. These properties allow the adhesive to be strong and remain engaged to the dryer apparatus when wet but be easily removed by the creping blade when dry.

Polyamidoamine (PAE) resins are prepared from polyamidoamine made with excess amine, which are reacted with a specifically defined amount of difunctional crosslinker. The amount of difunctional crosslinker used is based on the polyamidoamine amine number and reduced specific viscosity (RSV). The PAE resin is prepared by first synthesizing a polyamidoamine from a polyamine and a polycarboxylic acid or polycarboxylic acid derivative, wherein the polyamine is present in a molar excess, said molar excess being from about 1.02 to 2.00, then reacting the polyamidoamine with difunctional crosslinker, wherein the weight % of difunctional crosslinker to polyamidoamine solids is no more than about 0.308(amine number/RSV) - 9.18 or 0,385(amine number/RSV) - 5.20, wherein the amine number is expressed as the milliequivalents of amine per gram of polyamidoamine solids and the RSV is the reduced specific viscosity measured at 2 % concentration in IM NH4Cl expressed in deciliters per gram. PAE resins prepared according to this process can by used in creping adhesives, which are used to manufacture a variety of paper articles, such as facial tissue, bath tissue, wipes, paper towels, paper napkins, filter papers, and coffee filters.

The invention relates to a process for the production of a nitrogen containing epihalohydrin polymer involving reaction of a nitrogen-containing precursor selected from the group consisting of amines, poly-amines, polyaminoamides, polyurethanes and mixtures thereof with epihalohydrin to form of a solution of said epihalohydrin polymer, the process comprising a purification step to remove organic impurities from the formed solution of the epihalohydrin polymer, said purification step comprising contacting the solution of the epihalohydrin polymer with a fluid under liquid, supercritical or near supercritical conditions to effect extraction of organic impurities from the solution of the epihalohydrin polymer to the fluid, withdrawing fluid enriched in organic impurities from the solution of the epihalohydrin polymer, and separating extracted impurities from the withdrawn fluid, wherein the fluid comprises a substance that at atmospheric pressure and room temperature (about 25°C) is gaseous. The invention also relates to a process for purifying a solution of a nitrogen containing epihalohydrin polymer.
