An apparatus, a system, and a method for heat treating a moisture-containing or water-laden material are provided. The heat treatment can be drying for dehydration, gasification, or full carbonization. The system comprises a feeding mechanism, and a rapid compression unit (RCU) apparatus having a screw, a barrel, and one or more flow disrupters. The system can further include a reflux condenser, an aftercooler stage, a second condenser for particle filtering, and an exit mechanism. The one or more flow disrupters are located on an inner surface of the barrel and project into the passageway created by the screw and the barrel. The screw is sized to fit within the barrel such that flow disrupter does not contact the screw. The one or more flow disrupters cause the water-laden material to fold over onto its self, thereby, allowing for the occurrence of more uniform drying.

The present invention relates to a pyrolysis apparatus comprising a pyrolysis chamber have a first end and a second end, a feed inlet connected adjacent the first end of the pyrolysis chamber, a biochar outlet connected adjacent the second end of the pyrolysis chamber, and a gas outlet in fluid communication with the pyrolysis chamber. The pyrolysis chamber and feed inlet further comprise centreless screw conveyors. The present invention alleviates the problems associated with dust, oils and tars being present in the generated syngas. The present invention can also be used in a method of continuously processing biomass.

The pyrolyzer (30) has a pyrolyzer furnace housing (31) having at least two screws (34) laterally positioned adjacent and overlapping rotatably mounted within the furnace for moving volatile material through the pyrolyzer furnace housing. The screws have hollow drive shafts (62) with a diverter (64) inside for converging heated fluid to heat the volatile material moving through the pyrolyzer furnace housing. A combustion chamber (42) combusts fuel to create heated exhaust gas for directing through the hollow drive shafts to heat the volatile material. The pyrolyzer furnace housing may have a double wall with a cavity (70) between, capable of receiving heated fluid for further heating of volatile material moving through the pyrolyzer furnace housing.

A staged gasification process and system for thermal gasification of special waste fractions and biomass, e.g. wood comprises a drier (1), in which the fuel is dried by contact with superheated steam. The dried fuel is fed into a pyrolysis unit (4) to which superheated steam is also supplied. The volatile tar containing components produced in the pyrolysis unit (4) is passed to an oxidation zone (5) in which an oxidation agent is added so as to cause a partial oxidation, whereby the content of tar is substantially reduced. The solid fuel components from the pyrolysis unit (4) may be fed into a gasification unit (6) to which hot gases from the oxidation zone (5) are supplied. In the gasification unit (6) the solid fuel components are gasified or converted to carbon. The gas produced in the gasification unit (6) may be burnt in a combustion unit (7), such as a combustion engine. Thus, a gasification process is obtained for gasification of biomass and waste with a high energy efficiency, low tar content of the gasification gas, with moderate risk of slagging for a wide spectrum of fuels, including fuels with a large content of moisture.

A gasification auger with a hopper reservoir (1) that feeds a variety of undried, friable materials to an auger (2) powered by a motor (3). Along the auger (2) there is a section where the helix is interrupted by a series of blades (5). Surrounding the output end of the auger tube (4) is a cylindrical combustion chamber (10,11), which generates heat to gasify the raw material whilst it is completely contained within the auger tube (4). The combustion chamber (10,11) has air direction tubes, between the inner combustion chamber (11) and the outer combustion chamber (10). Air and fuel is introduced to the combustion chamber (10,11) and the resulting heated gas is then extracted and can be used to run a variety of engines or equipment before being directed to a heating chamber (7) which may form part of an integral heat exchanger. The auger tube (4) is provided with apertures for the removal of gases (9), which can be fed to a burner (12) in the combustion chamber. Another aperture (6) allows for the extraction of steam from damp material.
