The presently claimed invention is directed to the use of novel 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid ester as lubricants. The 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid ester are obtained by reacting 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid with at least one branched or linear, substituted or un-substituted aliphatic C6 to C20 alcohol of the general formula R-OH. The present invention is also directed to a preparation process for the 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid esters.

Disclosed is a novel compound which is able to improve solubility of various lubricating oil additives when used as a base oil component in a lubricating oil composition. In addition, the compound realizes low viscosity/low volatility characteristics which have not been achieved in PAO compositions to which conventional additives are added. Also disclosed is a method for producing such a novel compound. Specifically disclosed is 2-alkyl-4,4-dialkyl-1,3-dioxolane having a structure represented by the general formula (I) below. In the formula, R1-R4 independently represent an alkyl group having 1-30 carbon atoms.

Specifically, the present invention relates to low-volatility / low-viscosity lubricant base stocks, lubricant base stocks and base oils, formulated lubricant compositions or functional fluids comprising these base stocks and methods of making them. Different zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDPs) exhibit different volatilities and have different effects on automotive emissions control catalysts. The ZDDPs and their respective decomposition fragments that have low volatility will have a correspondingly lower detrimental effect on combustion emissions control systems, because there are simply fewer phosphorous atoms that will pass through the combustion system to reach the emissions control system. Specifically, it has been discovered that ZDDPs that contain a significant fraction of MIBC ZDDP exhibit significantly lower volatility than other ZDDPs.
