The novel constructs and methods of this invention improve tolerance in plants to environmental stresses and senescence. Nucleic acids encoding a plant farnesyl transferase are described, as are transgenic plants and seeds incorporating these nucleic acids and proteins. Also provided are inhibitors of naturally-occurring farnesyl transferase which, when expressed, will enhance drought tolerance in the plants, improve resistance to senescence and modify growth habit.

The present invention relates to plant enzymes responsible for hydroxylation of abscisic acid, said enzymes capable of 7'- and 8'- hydroxylation of abscisic acid, and polynucleotides encoding the same. The invention further relates to methods for using said polynucleotides to alter plant metabolism, in particular metabolism of abscisic acid. The invention further relates to plants exhibiting altered characteristics as a result of the alteration of abscisic acid metabolism.

The present invention relates to a use of AtBGl {Arabidopsis thaliana ß-glucosidase 1) gene and a transgenic plan with the AtBGl gene insertion, more precisely, a use of AtBGl gene for the generation of a transgenic plant having resistance to various environmental stresses by increasing the level of abscisic acid (ABA) , a kind of plant hormone, and a transgenic plant having stress-resistance with the AtBGl gene insertion. Plants have enhanced resistance against various environmental stresses including low temperature, salt damage and dehydration owing to the increased level of ABA. Thus, the method to increase the level of ABA can greatly contribute to the enhancement of agricultural production.
