Provided are a novel Candida tropicalis CJ-FID (KCTC 10457BP) derived from honey and a method for producing xylitol using the same. The method includes culturing the Candida tropicalis CJ-FID itself or an alginate-immobilized Candida tropicalis CJ-FID in a fermentation medium containing high concentration xylose and sucrose to obtain xylitol-containing culture, followed by purification with an activated charcoal column and anion column, to finally obtain a powdery xylitol. Therefore, high purity xylitol can be produced with high yield and productivity.

A method of producing biological oils includes producing an organism and having the organism consume a feedstock. The organism includes a lipid containing fatty acids. The organism meets or exceeds at least two metrics. The metrics include: A) a cell density of at least about 115 grams per liter; B) a fatty acid content of at least about 49 percent on a dry mass basis; C) a fatty acid productivity of at least about 15 grams per liter per day; D) a fatty acid yield of at least about 0.175 grams of fatty acids produced per grams of the feedstock consumed; E) a 24 hour peak fatty acid productivity of at least about 30 grams per liter per day; F) an extraction efficiency on a percent of total fatty acid content basis of at least about 50 percent; and/or G) yield of fatty acids on oxygen of more than about 0.4 as grams of fatty acids produced per gram of oxygen consumed basis.

Disclosed is a process for producing actinol from ketoisophorone which comprises contacting ketoisophorone with a recombinant microorganism or cell-free extract thereof in a reaction mixture, wherein said recombinant microorganism is obtainable by transforming a host microorganism, e.g. selected from the group consisting of microorganisms of the genera Saccharomyces, Zygosaccharomyces, and Candida, such as commercially available baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC7754, Saccharomyces rouxii (Zygosaccharomyces rouxii) HUT7191 (IFO 0494), Saccharomyces delbrueckii HUT7116 (Saccharomyces unisporus IFO 0298), Saccharomyces delbrueckii (Torulaspora delbrueckii) HUT7102, Saccharomyces willianus HUT7106, Zygosaccharomyces bailii ATCC11486, Candida tropicalis IFO 1403, and a mutant thereof, which is capable of reducing ketoisophorone to levodione with a levodione reductase gene, e.g. a levodione reductase gene derived from a microorganism belonging to the genus Corynebacterium, such as C. aquaticum AKU611 (FERM BP-6448) or a mutant thereof, and isolating the produced actinol from the reaction mixture.

This invention describes a low cost biofermentation medium, and an economical method using the medium, for the manufacture of alpha , omega -alkanedicarboxylic acids. The invention provides a biofermentation medium and a method of bioproduction for these important diacids which makes their large scale commercial production economically feasible using a biocatalyst. This method of production obviates the need for chemical synthesis using expensive starting materials from fossil fuels, and does not generate a costly hazardous waste stream.
