The electric resistance type sensor (29) generates an output value corresponding to the amounts of deposition of particulate matter and hydrocarbons which are contained in the exhaust gas and deposited at the sensor part thereof. From the change of the output value of the electric resistance type sensor (29), it is judged if the hydrocarbons have slipped through the NO x storage catalyst (13) and if the particulate matter has slipped through the particulate filter (14).

Accordingly, the supply timing and supply amount of the reductant can be optimized, thereby realizing minimization of mileage deterioration and inhibition of ingredient deterioration with respect to the exhaust gas outflowing into the atmosphere.

When the SOx occluded in the NOx catalyst (16) are released, an amount of SOx occluded in the NOx catalyst (16) is estimated, and an air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx catalyst (16) is controlled to be a richer side one in accordance with a decrease in the estimated amount of SOx occlusion, whereby an HC concentration of the exhaust gas flowing out of the NOx catalyst (16) is adjusted to be less than or equal to a prescribed HC concentration.
