The invention relates to a particle radiation device comprising a particle source that is operated in an ultrahigh vacuum and a preparation chamber which can be operated using variable pressures of up to 1 hPa. The inventive particle radiation device has two intermediate pressure areas (7, 8) located between the ultrahigh vacuum area (6) and the preparation chamber (1). The two intermediate pressure areas (7, 8) are purged by means of a pump assembly consisting of a fore-pump (16) and two turbomolecular pumps (13, 14) connected in series, whereby one of the turbomolecular pumps (13) is purged first by the drag phase (24) of the other turbomolecular pump (14). In one example of the invention, the fore-pump (16) is also simultaneously used for evacuating the preparation chamber. In an alternative example, a second fore-pump (20) is provided for evacuating the preparation chamber (1). This assembly allows the ultrahigh vacuum in the ultrahigh vacuum area (6) to be maintained up to pressures of 100 hPa in the preparation chamber (1). The inventive particle radiation device is used in particular as a variable pressure scanning electron microscope (VP-SEM) or as an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM).

A first aspect of this invention provides a ventilator comorising a motor (14), a fan (16) and a solar cell (12), the solar cell (12) being arranged to power the motor (14) which in turn drives the fan (16) when sufficient radiation impinges upon the soiar cell (12). The ventilator can be used in greenhouses. A second aspect of the present invention provides a solar powered air modifier comprising a motor (14), a fan (16), a solar cell (12) and means for housing a product to be dispersed by the modifier, the solar cell (12) being arranged to power the motor (14) so as to drive the fan (16) and disperse the product when sufficent radiation impinges upon the solar cell (12). The product to be dispersed can be an air freshener, an insecticide or similar product. In a third aspect, the present invention provides a solar powered device consisting of at least a motor (14), a fan (16) and a solar power unit (12), the solar power unit (12) being arranged to power the motor for driving the fan (16), and further comprising an electric energy storage device which is connected to receive energy from the solar power unit (12) and which is connnectable to drive the fan (16). A further aspect of the invention provides a valve actuator comprising a solar power unit (32), a motor (34) and a valve actuating member (48), the motor (34) being connected to an electrical supply from the solar power unit (32 and being operable to drive the valve actuating member (48) which is arranged to periodically open and close a valve. Another aspect of the invention provides a head gear formed of a rigid or semi-rigid material including a ventilator comprising a motor (14), a fan (16) and a solar power unit (12), the solar power unit (12) being arranged to drive the motor (14) which in turn drives the fan (16) when sufficient radiation impinges upon the solar power unit (12), whereby the head gear is ventilated.
