Provided is a method of manufacturing an outer joint member of a constant velocity universal joint, which is constructed by forming, through use of separate members, a cup section having track grooves formed at an inner periphery of the cup section and engageable with torque transmitting elements, and a shaft section formed at a bottom portion of the cup section, and by welding a cup member forming the cup section and a shaft member forming the shaft section, the method including: forming the cup member and the shaft member of medium carbon steel; preparing, as the cup member, a cup member having a cylindrical portion and a bottom portion integrally formed by forging, and a joining end surface formed on an outer surface of the bottom portion in a machining step after the forging; preparing, as the shaft member, a shaft member having a joining end surface to be joined to the bottom portion of the cup member, which is formed in the machining step; bringing the joining end surface of the cup member and the joining end surface of the shaft member into abutment against each other; and welding the cup member and the shaft member by radiating a beam from an outer side of the cup member to an abutment portion between the cup member and the shaft member in a radial direction of the cup member, in which the shaft member has a step portion in which the joining end surface is formed and a radially inner side recessed portion formed thereon by forging from a billet cut from a bar material.

The present invention provides a grease composition for constant velocity joints containing a lubricating base oil, at least one thickener selected from urea-based thickeners, urethane-based thickeners and urea/urethane-based thickeners, an organomolybdenum, a zinc dithiophosphate, a polysulfide, and a triglyceride, wherein the content of the organomolybdenum is 1000-5000 ppm by mass in terms of molybdenum element based on the total amount of the grease composition. According to the grease composition, it is possible to exert sufficient characteristics even in the case of reducing the amount of the additive such as molybdenum disulfide.

The installation structure prevents wear and damage to an input shaft of the rotation detector caused by a radial force applied to the input shaft and has high detection accuracy by eliminating slack between the rotational shaft and the input shaft. The rotation detector is fixed to a support member rotatably supporting the rotational shaft such that the input shaft is substantially coaxial with the rotational shaft. The input shaft is coupled to the rotational shaft through a rotation transmitting means. The rotation transmitting means permits the axis of the input shaft to be offset from the axis of the rotational shaft and limits relative rotation between the input shaft and the rotational shaft. When the axis of the input shaft is offset from the axis of the rotational shaft, the radial force applied to the input shaft from the rotational shaft is absorbed and mitigated, and the rotation of the rotational shaft is transmitted to the input shaft without loss.

The cup member (12a) has a bottomed cylindrical shape that is opened at one end, and includes a cylindrical portion (12a1), a bottom portion (12a2), and a short shaft section (12a3) of a solid shaft shape protruding from the bottom portion (12a2) and having a joining end surface (50) formed at an end portion. The shaft member (13a) has a solid shaft shape and has a joining end surface (51) at one end. The joining end surface (50) of the cup member (12a) and the joining end surface (51) of the shaft member (13a) are brought into abutment against each other, and a high energy intensity beam is radiated from an outer side in a radial direction to form a welded portion (49). A structure of a molten metal at the welded portion (49) is in a mixed phase of ferrite and granular cementite. With this, a crack is prevented at a welded portion of an outer joint member of a constant velocity universal joint in which a cup member and a shaft member are welded.
