A crank mechanism for an internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder (1), a piston (2) reciprocable within the cylinder, and a rotatable shaft (4). The piston (2) is in drivable connection with the shaft (4) via a connecting rod (3), a drive ring (5) and a torque lobe (6). The connecting rod (3) is pivotally fixed to the piston (2), and the drive ring (5) is rigidly attached to the free end of the connecting rod (3). The torque lobe (6) is a circular plate eccentrically mounted on the shaft (4) for rotation therewith about the axis thereof. The drive ring (5) is an annular sleeve which is a rotatable sliding fit around the rim of the torque lobe (6). The axis of the piston (2) is offset with respect to the centre of the output shaft (4), whereby rectilinear movement of the piston (2) is converted to rotary movement of the torque lobe (6) or vice versa.

The pinion sectors (52, 54) are free to rotate about the crankpin (42) and articulate independently of each other through a selected angular range. When the crankpin (42), including the pinion sectors (52, 54), is inserted into the aperture (41) of the shuttle (34) with the pinion sectors (52, 54) engaging the racks (46, 48), motion is transferable between the crankpin (42) and the shuttle (34) through the pinion sectors (52, 54).

The piston, attached to the upper end of the connecting rod, will be made to dwell at the lower part of its travel, enhancing the output of the engine, pump or compressor through better utilization of the available cylinder pressure.

An Oldham drive engine for effectively taking out a maximum combustion pressure from the top dead center of a piston engine as a rotational output of an output shaft (17). An Oldham's coupling mechanism is formed by interposing a slider (11) between flanges (8, 9). One (8) of the flanges is made to act as an idler flange (8), while the other as an output flange (9), and the output end of a piston rod (4) is connected to the center of the above slider (11). Furthermore, the centerline (B2) of the flanges (8, 9) is oriented at an angle THETA relative to the cylinder centerline (B1) in a counter-rotational direction of the slider (11). In addition, it is possible to construct a multicylinder engine in which a plurality of engines of the above type are arranged side by side for connection, and in which idler flanges (8) supported between adjacent engine cases (7) rotate in conjunction with sliders (11) inside the respective engine cases (7), whereby the outputs of the respective pistons are collectively output to the output shaft of the final end engine case (7).
