A low-noise, paper pick or other single cycle mechanism is obtained by employing a rotary solenoid (15) which has a force to a detent position which may be overcome by force from a drive roller (1). In the detent position the drive roller faces a blank sector (5) of a gear (3) which is integral with a shaft (7), which is the shaft to be turned. An electrical control signal to the solenoid rotates gear (3) through gear (13), which is directly driven by the solenoid, and which turns gear (11) on the shaft. The drive gear overcomes the force of the solenoid until it is disengaged after one cycle, at which time the detent force of the solenoid holds the mechanism in its detent position.

A gear arrangement includes a first gear wheel 10 having a section 12 with missing teeth. A second gear wheel 14 is arranged to mesh with the first gear wheel 10. The first tooth 16 on the first gear wheel 10 to engage with the second gear wheel 14 (following the missing teeth section 12) is resiliently movable inwardly within a radial slot 18 to withdraw when engaging an opposing tooth 22. A spring 20 urges the tooth 16 outwardly to one side of the opposing tooth 22 and into a gap on that side of the opposing tooth 22, so as to align the first and second gear wheels. Such a gear arrangement has particular use in a geared value setting mechanism provided on a print drum shaft of a postage meter.

A transmission system for louver type sign wherein the signs consist of a plurality of multiple faced louvers having indicia defined thereon and the side-by-side relationship of the louvers permits pre-selected faces to define a complete image. The adjacent transmissions (10) are operated by a constantly rotating drive shaft (16) and the louvers may be simultaneously rotated or may sequentially operate in a delayed manner wherein the indicia on the louvers is progressively revealed in a "wave" manner. The drive shafts (16) of adjacent transmissions are interconnected and a plurality of transmissions are operated by a single constantly operating motor drive source, and in the disclosed embodiment, a complete rotation of the transmission's drive shaft produces one-third of a rotation of the output shafts (24) operating the louvers. A positive detent lock operated by a cam (34) formed on the drive shaft gear (22) produces a positive locking of the output shaft (24) and the position of the louvers, and the detent (38) is automatically engaged and released in the proper sequence by the cam.
