A system and method are described for performing tear film structure measurement. A broadband light source illuminates the tear film. A spectrometer measures respective spectra of reflected light from at least one point of the tear film. A color camera performs large field of view imaging of the tear film, so as to obtain color information for all points of the tear film imaged by the color camera. A processing unit calibrates the camera at the point measured by the spectrometer so that the color obtained by the camera at the point matches the color of the spectrometer at the same point. The processing unit determines, from the color of respective points of the calibrated camera, thicknesses of one or more layers of the tear film at the respective points. Other applications are also described.

A method of direct on-line measurement of thickness of fouling deposits created on the tube walls in a pulverized-coal firing furnace is described, as well as an apparatus suitable for implementation of the method. The method is based on imaging of a light spot, generated on the deposit surface by the apparatus. A position-sensitive image detector is used to track the spot as deposits accumulate, and the image signal is processed in real time, which allows for monitoring the creation of fouling deposits during operation of the furnace. The system simultaneously determines the reflectivity of the deposit surface. The apparatus can be used as part of an automatic soot blowing system.

Non-contacting caliper measurements of free-standing sheets detect mid-IR interferometric fringes created by the reflection of light from the top and bottom surfaces of the sheet. The technique includes directing a laser beam at a selected angle of incidence onto a single spot on the exposed outer surface and scanning the laser beam through a selected wavelength range as the laser beam is directed onto the exposed outer surface and measuring the intensity of an interference pattern that forms from the superposition of radiation that is reflected from the exposed outer surface and from the inner surface. Alternatively, the intensity of an interference pattern formed from the superposition of radiation that is directly transmitted through the web and radiation that is transmitted through the web after internal reflections from the internal surfaces of the web. Thickness can be extracted from the fringe separation in the interference pattern.

A mold inspection method of the present invention is a method for inspecting a mold (1) which has a porous alumina layer (6) over its surface, the porous alumina layer (6) having a plurality of minute recessed portions, the method comprising: step a of providing, based on a relationship between a first parameter that is indicative of a thickness of the porous alumina layer and a color parameter that is indicative of a color of reflected light from the porous alumina layer, first color information which represents a tolerance of the first parameter of a porous alumina layer which has an uneven structure that is within a tolerance; step b of providing a mold which is an inspection subject, the mold having a porous alumina layer over its surface; step c of obtaining a color parameter which is indicative of a color of reflected light from the porous alumina layer of the inspection subject mold; and step d of determining a suitability of the first parameter of the inspection subject mold based on the obtained color parameter and the first color information. According to the present invention, it is possible to nondestructively and readily inspect whether or not the minute uneven structure at the surface is within a predetermined range.

Apparatus and methods are described for performing structure measurement on a tear film of an eye of a subject. At least a portion of a surface of the tear film is illuminated using a broadband light source. A spectrum of light of the broadband light that is reflected from at least one point of the tear film is measured, using a spectrometer. Color information for a plurality of points of the tear film is obtained, by imaging a field of view of the tear film using a color camera. Using a processing unit, data from the color camera and data from the spectrometer that are indicative of characteristics of the tear film are received, and based upon a combination of the data received from the color camera and the data received from the spectrometer, an output is generated that is indicative of a structure of the tear film.
