Instead of, in addition to, a GUI that includes an indication of an area of unknown associated with an obstacle, in some examples, a ground obstacle detection system to generate a GUI that includes at least two windows that present different views of an aircraft. At least one of the windows may include a graphical representation of an obstacle that may not be visible in the view of another window.

In some examples, a device or system is configured to create a narrow vertical pathway of detection that permits the enforcement of a fixed "exclusion zone" that is narrow and does not widen with range. An example system located on a vehicle includes at least two vertically separated antennas that receive radar reflection signals, a processor, and an output device. The processor receives the radar reflection signals received by the antennas, determines vertical position of any obstacles identified in the radar reflection signals and determines if the obstacles are within a predefined alert zone. The output device can output an alert if any obstacle is within the alert zone. The predefined alert zone may be related to a protruding portion of the vehicle.

Bekannte Flughafen-Überwachungssysteme, die mit Sekundärradar arbeiten, sind entweder zu ungenau oder es treten Bereiche auf, in denen keine Lokalisierung möglich ist. Diese Schwierigkeiten werden nach der Erfindung durch die Verwendung einer räumlich von der Abfrageantenne (1) abgesetzten Empfangsantenne (21) vermieden, die über eine schmale, ebenfalls eine Abtastbewegung beschreibende Keule (22) dieTransponder-Antworten der Flugzeuge (4) empfängt, welche sich jeweils im punktweise das Flugfeld (3) abtastenden Schnittfeld (27) der Abtrage-und Empfangskeule (2,22) befinden. Anstelle oder zusätzlich zu der Empfangsstation (21) mit der schmalen Antennenkeule (22) können auch mehrere Empfänger (5, 6, 7) mit Rundstrahl-Empfangsantennen am Flugfeldrand aufgestellt sein, so daß sich zur Ermittlung der Flugzeugpositionen das Prinzip der Hyperbel-Ortung anwenden läßt. An exemplary embodiment reduces energy of an output pulse emitted from a radar system (410); receives a plurality of radar returns from a plurality of objects that reflect the reduced energy output pulses emitted from the radar system (410); determines a surface area of interest based upon at least a current location of the installation vehicle (122); and filters the radar returns generated by objects that are located outside of the surface area of interest. Optionally, some systems and methods may reduce a sweep range of an antenna from which the reduced energy output pulses are emitted.

Systems and methods for aiding in pilot awareness of obstacles relative to aircraft features. An exemplary processor 36, 50 receives sensor information from one or more sensors 26 mounted in an aircraft feature (e.g. light modules 30), determines if at least one obstacle is located within a predefined field of view based on the received sensor or database information and generates an image. The image includes an ownship icon having at least one feature representing wingtips of the aircraft and at least one indicator associated with the determined at least one obstacle. A display device 54 presents the generated image. The display device presents a tip of a first sense coverage area adjacent to one wingtip feature associated with the port wing and a tip of the second sense coverage area adjacent to one wingtip feature associated with the starboard wing. The indicator is presented within at least one of the coverage areas.
