A registration controller (150) is utilized to synchronize the movement of the web (60) with the operation of the utilization device element (64). The controller includes a drive controller that controls the speed of either the drive roller (72) or the utilization device (64) to maintain the web and the utilization device element in appropriate synchronization.

A process is described for printing a print image on a continuous support material (20) relative to a pre-set position in an electrographic printer (10) in which a stepper motor (12) controlled by an electric impulse sequence (SIF) drives a transport device (14). This device (14) transports the reproductive material (20) past a transfer station (16), essentially according to a pre-set printing speed (VD). In the printing process, print images are produced in sequence on the support material (20). When the print control (62) starts printing a print image, a print image start signal (SAS) is produced. This signal starts a process which counts a cycle signal (ZTF) in a counter (64). A signal receiver (58) checks the support material (20) for marks (48) which are present at regular intervals for positioning. When the signal receiver (58) registers a mark (48), it produces a marking signal (115) and the counting process is interrupted by the appearance of the marking signal (115) or after a fixed number of marking signals (115). The counter tally is compared with a control value (step 208) which corresponds to a counter value at an offset-free positioning of the print image relative to the markers (48) and according to which the frequency of the electrical impulse sequence (SIF) is adjusted, depending on the results of the comparison (steps 210, 216).
