At the time of injection, addresses that are generated by an address generator (20) and that are renewed every moment are supplied to first and second memories (16, 18) via an address switching circuit (21) to specify addresses in the two memories (16, 18). At the same time, output of a pulse counter (15) which indicates the screw position and output of an analog-digital converter (17) which indicates the internal pressure in a metal mold (30) are stored in the first and second memories (16, 18) every moment. At the time of monitoring, values stored in the first and second memories (16, 18) are read out via the address switching circuit (21) that is switched, and a relation between the screw position and the pressure in the mold is displayed on a display device (25).

An apparatus for cutting off materialographic samples from a specimen (16) by abrasive cutting has a stepmotor (6) with associated stepmotor driver (55) for feeding a rotating abrasive cutting wheel (8) against a specimen (16), or vice versa. The stepmotor driver (55) supplies to the stepmotor (6) current pulses, the current value of which determines the feeding force, while their frequency determines the feeding speed. The apparatus further comprises an electronic data processor (51) for adjusting, co-ordinating and displaying the parameters of the abrasive cutting operation. The processor (51) can be used for manual or automatic correlation of feeding speed and feeding force. In carrying out this correlation it is possible to obtain intermittent cutting, if desired involving retraction of the abrasive cutting wheel (8) and the specimen (16) from one another from time to time to establish a free interspace, which optimizes the efficiency of water flushing in the cutting area.

A method of automatically retrieving working conditions in an electric discharge machine, wherein the said method is built up on the basis of an expert system and, even by an unskilled operator, optimal working conditions in the electric discharge machine can be set. A source knowledge base (6) prepared on the basis of the knowledge and experience of an expert (5) an including data on working conditions and production rules is converted into an object knowledge base (3) by a compiler (4), and subsequently, the knowledge base (3) together with an inference engine (2) are stored in a computer-incorporating type numerical control device (10) equipped on the electric discharge machine. When the operator (1) inputs the retrieving conditions including the diameter of the wire, the material quality of the work, the plate thickness of the work, the desirable mean working speed, the surface roughness, the working accuracy and the like via a manual input data device (25) in order to perform automatic retrieving of the working conditions, the inference engine successively processes the production rules relating to the retrieving conditions while utilizing the data on the working conditions relating to the production rules, retrieves the working conditions suitable for the retrieving conditions and displays them on a display screen.
