A magnetic head (1) includes two substrates (7) which are provided with magnetic cores (3) of magnetic film on their surface and are bonded on a plane so that a magnetic gap (5) is defined between the magnetic cores, an edge part of the magnetic cores with the magnetic gap (5) facing to a track of a recording medium being thinned from opposite sides thereof, and the magnetic cores (3) in any other part being thicker than the edge part. In a gap facing plane where a pair of the magnetic cores (3) join together, the magnetic cores are registered with each other so that they can be opposed to each other in a larger width in the back gap than in the front gap. As a result, even if a tolerance of a process in manufacturing is considerably loosened, a magnetic head (1) with high core efficiency can be obtained with a high yield.

A magnetic transducer assembly having separate core portions (12, 13) with keyways (17,18) provided therein. The core portions are assembled to form a substantially closed magnetic circuit defining a transducing gap (35). The keyways form recesses which are contiguous with a transducer inner space provided by the assembled cores. The inner space and recesses are filled with a nonmagnetic bonding material. The resulting bond improves the mechanical coupling between the core portions.

The reliability of a magnetic head is improved by eliminating the need of putting glass, etc., on a magnetic film. A method of manufacturing a magnetic head which has a pair of magnetic core halves in which magnetic films are formed on substrates and which face to each other and a thin film coil is formed on at least one of the mutually facing surfaces of the core halves, comprising the steps of forming recessed portions in the substrates by, say, ion milling, and forming the magnetic films in the recessed sections. It is preferable that the magnetic films each comprise a magnetic film whose axis of easy magnetization is in the direction of the magnetic gap depth and a magnetic film whose axis of easy magnetization is in the direction perpendicular to the depth direction.
