A fluoropolymer composite film wire or cable wrap comprises an outer layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and an inner layer of melt processable fluoropolymer film. The inner and outer layers are laminated with each other in tape form, such as by the application of heat and/or pressure thereto. The fluoropolymer composite tape is wrapped about one or more wires or cables, and is heated or sintered after wrapping to bond the tape to the wire or cable, and bond the tape to itself at the seams.

The method comprises the following steps: i) preparing a polymer composition comprising a polymer matrix, at least one conductive filler different from a non-linear conductive organic filler, and at least one crosslinking agent, ii) extruding the polymer composition into a crosslinkable field grading tape, iii) winding the crosslinkable field grading tape onto a section of power cable in need of field grading, and iv) crosslinking the crosslinkable tape to obtain a field grading layer.

A system and a method are presented. The system (10) includes an electrically conducting material (12) and an electrical insulation system (24). The electrical insulation system (24) includes a layered insulation tape (30) that has a first layer (32) and a second layer (34). The first layer (32) includes a mica paper and a binder resin in a range from about 5 wt% to about 12 wt% of the insulation tape (30). The second layer (34) includes a composite of layered nanoparticles dispersed in a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix. The second layer (34) laminates the first layer (32). The method includes attaching the first layer (32) and the second layer (34) with or without the addition of further resin; using the layered insulation tape (30) as a turn insulation (14) and/or a ground wall insulation (22) for an electrically conducting material (12); and impregnating the system (10) with a nanofiller-incorporated resin by a vacuum pressure impregnation method, to form an insulation system (24) within the system (10).

The invention firstly exhibits the surprising erosion-inhibiting effect of a bimodal nanoparticulate filler. The invention discusses whether the good results as shown in figures 3 to 5 are attributable to a kind of crosslinking of the nanoparticles by agglomeration. In any case, it is tellingly shown that admixing a second, preferably smaller fraction of a nanoparticulate filler can produce considerable advantages.
