The sleeve includes a flexible wall having a plurality of yarns interlaced with one another. At least some of the plurality of yarns are provided as improved multifilament yarns having low-melt filaments and non-low-melt filaments. The low-melt filaments have a first melt temperature and the non-low-melt filaments having a second melt temperature, with the second melt temperature being greater than the first melt temperature. The low-melt filaments are bonded with the non-low-melt filaments to prevent relative sliding movement therebetween.

A composite core for use in electrical cables, such as high voltage transmission cables is provided. The composite core contains at least one rod that includes a continuous fiber component surrounded by a capping layer. The continuous fiber component is formed from a plurality of unidirectionally aligned fiber rovings embedded within a thermoplastic polymer matrix. The present inventors have discovered that the degree to which the rovings are impregnated with the thermoplastic polymer matrix can be significantly improved through selective control over the impregnation process, and also through control over the degree of compression imparted to the rovings during formation and shaping of the rod, as well as the calibration of the final rod geometry. Such a well impregnated rod has a very small void fraction, which leads to excellent strength properties. Notably, the desired strength properties may be achieved without the need for different fiber types in the rod.

In one approach, the subassembly is a cabled set of conductors (e.g., twisted pair) operating as class 2 or class 3 circuit conductors in accordance with Article 725 of the National Electrical Code®. In another approach, the MC cable assembly includes a protective layer disposed around the jacket layer of one or more of the plurality of power conductors and the subassembly. In yet another approach, a bonding/grounding conductor is cabled with the plurality of power conductors and the subassembly.

This invention relates to armoured submarine power cables. These cables are designed for laying in waters with varying depths. The cable will be designed with an armour which is heavy and strong (steel wires) (10) in shallow water section (3, 5). In very deep waters the weight of steel armour is prohibitive so that in these sections (4) the armour is made of synthetic light weight material (11). The transitions between the two types of armour are made physically concentrated but flexible enough to prevent sharp bends of the cable core as it passes cable laying machinery. The armour joint may be displaced from cable core joints and should effectively transfer all longitudinal strain in the cable.

Considerable problems are experienced with cables when inserting them in conduit. Only a limited length can be inserted in the conduit so that there must be frequent joints in the cable and the outer sheath is often damaged. The present invention provides a laminate which is particularly applicable as the outer sheath on a cable and which includes a first inner layer of plastics and an outer layer of different harder plastics and incompatible with the first layer and bonded to the inner layer by a bonding layer which is a mixture of the plastics of the two layers. The laminate has applications in addition to cable sheaths.
