A mass spectrometer is provided including: a collision chamber of generating fragment ions by superimposingly applying an AC voltage and a first DC voltage between linear multipolar electrodes, and accelerating the fragment ions by applying a second DC voltage between a front stage electrode and a later stage electrode; a mass spectrometer unit of carrying out mass separation of the fragment ions; and a control unit of determining the second DC voltage based on the mass-to-charge ratios such that the rates of the fragment ions in the collision chamber become equal regardless of the mass-to-charge ratios. Herein, the control unit increases the second DC voltage as the mass-to-charge ratios selected by the mass spectrometer unit become larger. This allows the mass window to be wider even when a DC electric field is generated in order to solve a crosstalk drawback, in the movement direction of the molecular ions.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung einer mehrpoligen Elektrodenanordnung 1 zur Fokussierung oder Massenfilterung eines Strahls geladener Teilchen, wobei die Anordnung eine Mehrzahl langgestreckter, parallel zu einer Achse angeordneter Elektroden 2 aufweist, wobei das Verfahren folgende Schritte umfasst: a) Befestigen mehrerer rundstabförmiger Elektrodenrohlinge 9 - jedoch nur eines Teils der für die Elektrodenanordnung 1 vorgesehenen Gesamtanzahl von Elektroden 2 - an einem oder mehreren Trägerelementen 4, b) gleichzeitiges Bearbeiten von Endabschnitten 6 des bzw. der Trägerelemente 4 zusammen mit den an diesem bzw. diesen Trägerelementen befestigten Elektrodenrohlingen 9 in einem Arbeitsgang derart, dass jeder Elektrodenrohling 9 durch die Bearbeitung zu einer Elektrode 2 wird, die einen Querschnitt mit einem kreisförmigen Abschnitt KA und einem nicht-kreisförmigen, insbesondere im wesentlichen hyperbelförmigen, Abschnitt HA aufweist und am Ende dieser gleichzeitigen Bearbeitung des bzw. jedes der Trägerelemente 4 zwei unterschiedlich geformte, jedoch in ihrer Form aneinander angepasste Endabschnitte aufweist. Die Schritte a) und b) werden mehrfach und zwar so oft durchgeführt, bis die für die Elektrodenanordnung 1 vorgesehene Gesamtanzahl von Elektroden 2 bereitgestellt ist, wobei im Schritt a) jeweils ein bzw. mehrere eigene Trägerelemente 4 zur Befestigung verwendet werden. Improvements to a side-on Penning trap include a feedback system for stabilizing the magnetic field. This system includes a magnetic sensor that measures the magnetic field and a solenoid coil that in response to the magnetic field measurements increases or decreases the overall magnetic field. Improvements also include a number of different configurations of the two sets of PCB electrodes used to produce the quadrupole electric field. Dimensions of the PCB electrodes are optimized, an equipotential surface electrode is added, and additional ring electrodes are added to produce a purer quadrupole field. A central disk electrode is segmented to direct charged particles to the trap center to make the trap useful for applications other than mass spectrometry. Finally, outer ring electrodes are segmented to increase the path of charged particles, thereby increasing sensitivity.

An RF voltage is applied across each electrode of a first array of evenly spaced, parallel, and coplanar electrodes and its corresponding electrode of a second array of evenly spaced, parallel, and coplanar electrodes. The RF voltage varies in amplitude according to an RF voltage amplitude gradient. The RF voltage produces an array of different quadrupole RF electric fields in a uniform gap between the first array and the second array. A DC voltage is superimposed on each electrode of the first array and its corresponding electrode of the second array. The DC voltage varies according to a DC voltage gradient in order to produce a DC electric field in the uniform gap. When ions are introduced in the uniform gap, the DC electric field causes the ions to drift toward quadrupole RF electric fields with increasing RF voltage amplitudes where the ions are trapped according to their m/z.
