A drive system has a number of electrical machines. One machine operates as a generator supplying an output to a DC link, which in turn supplies one or more machines operating as motors to drive loads. The motors are supplied through power converters. The total capacitance of the DC link is minimised and the link kept in a stable condition by preventing it falling to a hazardous level. One embodiment prevents the phase currents adding in such a manner as to reduce the DC link voltage. Another embodiment employs freewheeling in the phase currents to prevent the DC link voltage falling below a predetermined threshold.

The present invention provides an S SRM (switched reluctance machine), which supports one or more phases and each phase comprises a stator, a rotor and coils. The stator is hollow, cylindrical and comprises stator poles extending inwards, such that a recess is formed between adjacent stator poles. The coils are wound on the stator poles and occupy the recess. The rotor is positioned inside the stator and has poles extending outwards. The rotor and stator poles subtend an angle having a maximum value of 0.5 electrical pole pitches at a center of rotation. The different phases are distributed along the axis of the S SRM. The rotor is rotated by a reluctance torque generated by energizing a phase in a current controlled manner until the rotor rotates through a minimum commutation angle required to maintain motion; de-energizing the phase by freewheeling it by using the energy stored in it and simultaneously energizing a second sequentially adjacent phase.

A Switched Reluctance (SR) generator having improved efficiency at low and high speed is disclosed. The SR generator includes a step-up converter for controlling an excitation voltage of an excitation capacitor capable of providing a phase winding with an excitation current. Therefore, the SR generator can control the excitation current, and can provide a phase winding with a sufficient excitation current, thereby improving efficiency. The step-up converter is arranged between a battery capable of storing generated power and the excitation capacitor, boosts a voltage of the battery, and provides the excitation capacitor with the boosted voltage. Therefore, the SR generator does not include an additional power-supply unit for a boosting function, resulting in simplification of an overall structure and reduction of a production cost.
