Systems and methods for decoding block and concatenated codes are provided. These include advanced iterative decoding techniques based on belief propagation algorithms, with particular advantages when applied to codes having higher density parity check matrices. Improvements are also provided for performing channel state information estimation including the use of optimum filter lengths based on channel selectivity and adaptive decision-directed channel estimation. These improvements enhance the performance of various communication systems and consumer electronics. Particular improvements are also provided for decoding HD Radio signals, including enhanced decoding of reference subcarriers based on soft-diversity combining, joint enhanced channel state information estimation, as well as iterative soft-input soft-output and list decoding of convolutional codes and Reed-Solomon codes. These and other improvements enhance the decoding of different logical channels in HD Radio systems.

A coding system is disclosed wherein the receive side includes a decoder capable of producing, in addition to the hard information decoded output, either or both symbol and/or bit soft information values. For a certain information bit position, a value proportional to the joint probability that a received symbol and the set of all hypothesized transmitted codewords led to the estimated or detected hard information output is calculated. The calculated probabilities with respect to plural codewords having a zero in that certain information bit position are compared to the calculated probabilities with respect to the plural codewords having a one in that certain information bit position. The result of the comparison provides an indication of whether the hard information output in that same information bit position is more likely a one or a zero. The output soft information values are further processed in comparison to a preset threshold, with instances exceeding the threshold triggering block rejections and/or retransmissions.

The data error correction system comprises a Viterbi decoder 13 for decoding a designated encoded data from a buffer 12 and a block decoder for executing decoding of the data corresponding to a length of a block code after being decoded from the Viterbi decoder 13, when error correction is possible. When error correction is not possible, the data error correction system controls execution of re-decoding by the Viterbi decoder for executing error correction of the data corresponding to a length of a block code whose correction has not been possible yet at this stage.

This application discloses a coding method and a communications device. The coding method includes: determining, by a communications device, a second transport block, where the second transport block includes a first transport block and check information corresponding to the first transport block; determining, by the communications device according to scheduling information of the second transport block, a scheme for performing outer-code coding on the second transport block; determining, by the communications device, a third transport block, where when the scheduling information meets a preset condition, the third transport block is a transport block obtained by performing outer-code coding on the second transport block, or when the scheduling information does not meet a preset condition, the third transport block is specifically the second transport block; and performing, by the communications device, inner-code coding on the third transport block according to a predefined rule. According to the foregoing solution, a transmission resource can be effectively used, transmission resource utilization can be improved, an error floor of inner-code coding can be lowered, and data transmission reliability can be increased.
