A method and system of managing call forwarding includes establishing criteria for selecting among possible links between nodes for forwarding calls from an originating node to a destination node. In the preferred embodiment, the selection of the possible links is made at a called node from which the call is to be forwarded. Based upon the administrable criteria, there is a determination as to whether an intermediate node along the call path between the originating node and the called node is to be selected for initiating the forwarding path. If an intermediate node is selected, a request is transmitted to the intermediate node to initiate the forwarding path to the destination node. On the other hand, if no intermediate node is selected, a determination is made as to whether to initiate the forwarding path from the originating node or from the called node. Again, the determination is made according to the administrable criteria. Typically, the most important factor in selecting among the nodes relates to minimizing the link necessary to connect the calling party to the forwarded-to party, thereby releasing links for other use within a network.

Routing calls using a new protocol message which is a redirect message in a telecommunication system having a number of switching nodes to avoid circular paths among the switching nodes and for rerouting calls in the event of failures or overload conditions. During the establishment of a call from an originating switching node to a destination switching node where the call path has already been setup from the originating switching node through an intermediate switching node, a switching node is responsive to a setup message from the intermediate switching node requesting extension of the call path through the switching node to determine if such an extension would create a circular path. If circular path would be created, the switching node redirects the call (by using the redirect message) back to the intermediate switching node and indicates in that message to which switching node the call path should be extended. In response to the redirect message, the intermediate switching node reroutes the call path. Further, the redirect message entirely removes the call path between the switching node and intermediate switching node.

A relay trunk device of the local series (95(0), 95(1)) is supplied with the particular signals of the local and the different series with higher (1) and lower (2) degrees of priority and selects as a phase synchronized synchronization signal of the local series according to the higher and the lower degrees one of the particular signals that is normal. In a switching center of a highest hierarchy, the three input signals may be a synchronization signal of the local series produced in a lower hierarchy switching center, the phase synchronized synchronization signal of the different series, and the particular signal of the different series.
