The invention relates to a method for the combustion of a fuel and an oxidant, in which at least one jet of fuel and at least two jets of oxidant are injected. According to the invention, at least one first oxidant is injected at a distance I1, at most 20 cm, from the fuel injection point and at least one second oxidant is injected at a distance I2 from the fuel injection point, I2 being greater than I1. The aforementioned oxidants are injected in quantities such that the sum of the quantities thereof is at least equal to the stoichiometric quantity of oxidant necessary in order to ensure the combustion of the injected fuel. Moreover, the first oxidant is oxygen-enriched air having a temperature of at most 200°C and the second oxidant is air preheated to a temperature of at least 300°C.

A dry sorting machine having a separating function for removing solids of more than a predetermined size from ash and a drying function for drying the ash, and a magnetic sorting machine for removing metals from the dried ash are arranged in a pretreatment route for the ash to be supplied to the furnace. Further, there is provided a drying air pipe for introducing the high-temperature air heat-recovered from exhaust gases discharged from the ash melting furnace into the dry sorting machine. Thus, by the dry sorting machine having the separating and drying functions, simplification of the ash pretreatment process and reduction of the installation space can be achieved.

A method of melting glass forming material in a glass melting furnace, said furnace having a back wall, breast walls above sidewalls, and a downstream front wall connected to a roof, wherein at least one batch charger for charging glass forming batch material is contained in at least one of the back wall and the sidewall, comprising providing at least one oxy-fuel burner in the roof of said furnace over said batch material, wherein said at least one oxy-fuel burner is adapted for staged combustion; providing a flow of fuel to said at least one oxy-fuel burner; providing a flow of gaseous oxidant in association with said at least one oxy-fuel burner; injecting the fuel and the oxidant into the furnace, wherein the fuel jet comprises one of a substantially fuel only jet and a fuel rich fuel-oxidant mixture, and wherein the oxidant jet comprises one of a substantially oxidant only jet and a fuel lean fuel-oxidant mixture, wherein the injected fuel jet and the injected oxidant jet are separated, and are optionally angled with respect to the other, by an amount sufficient to cause the respective flows to converge proximate to or at the surface of the glass forming material, preferably wherein the fuel jet and oxidant jet are separated and angled with respect to each other from 0° to about 90°; and, combusting said fuel from at least said one oxy-fuel burner such that at least a portion of combustion is effected in the vicinity of said glass forming material to enhance convective and radiative transfer of heat to said glass forming material without substantially disturbing said glass forming material; optionally wherein the mixing of said fuel and said oxidant is delayed to localize combustion proximate to or at the surface of said glass forming material, optionally including staging the flow of fuel from the oxy-fuel burner, and further optionally including fully combusting reactive intermediate species proximate to or at the glass forming material surface.

The first stage (10) utilizes extended gas/solid contact to heat the materials to an intermediate temperature, and may recover waste heat. The second stage (12) rapidly liquefies the material in a cavity lined with the batch material, and may employ substantially nitrogen-free heatsources. Another aspect involves maintaining a wet condition in the first stage to entrap particulates.
