The method comprises contacting the contaminated fluid with an effective amount of an agent (12) selected from oxidizing agents, free radical producing agents and a combination thereof for an effective amount of time to convert a substantial amount of the at least one contaminant to at least one corresponding modified contaminant having a property selected from the group consisting of being non-volatile, less volatile than the converted contaminant, non-hazardous, less hazardous than the converted contaminant, non-tacky and a combination thereof; and generating a treated fluid (14) having a level of the at least one contaminant and of the at least one corresponding modified contaminant to allow the treated fluid to at least meet requirements for release, reuse or further treatment.

A paint detackification treatment for paint spray booths include a water soluble polymer which is a dicyanadiamide formaldehyde condensation product in combination with a multivalent metal salt, preferably aluminum chlorohydrate. The composition is added to the overspray collection tanks and acts to detackify particles of paint which are collected in a water curtain. The combination of the dicyanadiamide formaldehyde and aluminum chlorohydrate permits a lower concentration of polymer to be used and also permits this detackification product to be used with a wide variety of aqueous and oil based paints.

An aqueous, reversible and storable coating for protecting spray cabins from enamal overspray consists of a mixture containing 5 to 80 wt. % of a C8 carboxylic acid and/or the alkali metal salt of a C8 carboxylic acid, 1 to 40 wt. % of a pH regulator consisting of alkanol amines and/or alkali metal hydroxydes, 1 to 15 wt. % of a laminar silicate and/or polyacrylate and/or carboxymethylcellulose, the remainder being water. The mixture may also contain ordinary additives, and has a pH between 6 and 10 and a viscosity of 30 to 50 DIN.sec. The invention also relates to a process for producing these coatings.

Oversprayed paint in a paint spray operation is detackified by dosing the water of the waste water system of such operation with a composition comprising an amphoteric polymer and aluminum salts. The amphoteric polymer contains at least about 10 mole percent of cationic mer units of monethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least 1 mole percent of anionic mer units. The aluminum salt preferred is aluminum sulfate, or its hydrates, for example alum. The amphoteric polymers preferably contain DMAEM, DMAEM.H 2 S0 4 , DMAEM.MCQ, or mixtures thereof, with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, AMPS, or mixtures thereof. The amphoteric polymers may also contain neutral monomers such as (meth)acrylamide.
