Die Erfindung betrifft ein Analyseverfahren zur Bestimmung eines Organfunktionsparameters eines menschlichen oder tierischen Individuums durch Messung des 13 CO 2 -Gehalts in der Ausatemluft des Individuums. Dabei ist der Organfunktionsparameter die Leberfunktionskapazität und/oder die Mikrozirkulation eines Substrates in der Leber, wobei die Leberfunktionskapazität durch Bestimmung der maximalen Umsatzgeschwindigkeit des Substrats im Körper des Individuums ermittelt wird und wobei die Mikrozirkulation durch Bestimmung der Anflutungszeit ermittelt wird. Die Anflutungszeit ist die Zeit zum Erreichen der maximalen Umsatzgeschwindigkeit t vmax des Substrates. Die maximale Umsatzgeschwindigkeit des Substrats im Körper des Individuums wird mittels einer Enzymkinetik nullter Ordnung durch eine Veränderung des gemessenen 13 CO 2 -Gehalts in der Ausatemluft des Individuums bestimmt wird. Die maximale Umsatzgeschwindigkeit und/oder die Anflutungszeit werden mittels einer Division durch das Körpergewicht auf das Körpergewicht des Individuums normiert.

A method for identification of an infant being particularly susceptible to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) comprises the determination of an Helicobacter pylori infection in the infant's mother, particularly by detection of antibodies to H. pylori of the IgG type, in a blood sample drawn from the infant's mother or by determination of carbon dioxide formed from urea in the air exhaled from the infant's mother upon oral administration of a challenge dose of urea. Also disclosed is the use of an antibiotic effective against H. pylori for the manufacture of a medicament for administration to mothers and other persons infected by H. pylori and coming into close bodily contact with infants below two years of age, and a method for prevention of SIDS by administration of that antibiotic.

Process for the continuous analysis of the composition of gases, by means of a measuring head for determining the flow velocity and analysis equipment which is placed a distance away from the measuring head and is connected thereto by a sample line, a calibration gas being fed to the sample line at the measuring head, by means of which the transit time of the gases is determined, and by means of this transit time a phase shift is introduced during determining of the connection between the velocity of flow and the composition. According to the invention a series of calibration gas impulses are fed from the equipment, and the average transit time of the gases in the conditions prevailing locally at that moment is determined therewith, for the essentially continuous determination of the connection between the flow velocity and the composition. Device for carrying out the process comprising a measuring head (5) and analysis equipment (1) for determining the composition of the gases, provided with a source (7) of calibration gas in the analysis equipment (1), a calibration gas line (9) connected (at 11) to the sample line a short distance from the suction aperture thereof with the measuring head (5), means for maintaining the calibration gas under pressure, and means for periodically opening a valve in the calibration gas line, and means (12) for determining the transit time of the calibration gas impulses through the sample line.

An ethanol vapor sensor (15) is mounted on the upper edge (11) of the eyepiece (9) in a spaced relationship to the eye. After calibration of the sensor (15) the ethanol vapor concentration in the lacrimal fluid exuded by the eye is measured.

The invention relates to a novel biological marker for stress states which is highly significant and which can be used to measure stress levels quantitatively. For this purpose, it has been shown, surprisingly, that a person's end-expiratory air, called the alveolar air, contains fluorinated components when said person has experienced different stress states. More precisely, the invention relates to components based on fluorinated compounds, in particular chlorofluoroalkanes, which are used as a biological marker for stress states.
