A tool holder includes a plurality of portions (10,12) arranged in end-to-end relationship and interconnected by friction weld to form a unitary assembly subjected to a heat treatment. The portions formed of different respective materials have different mass properties and/or different chemical compositions. A front-most one of the portions constitutes a cutter head portion (12), and a rear-most one of the portions constitutes a mounting portion (10). The cutter head portion can be in the form of an unfinished blank which is subsequently machined. A third portion, e.g. of aluminum, could be provided to minimize the weight of the tool holder.

A plurality of inserts (20) are each respectively disposed on the mounting face (114) and secured under pressure onto the mounting face by means of a clamping screw (30) screwed into the first threaded hole (158). The cutting tool is characterized in having a plurality of reduced hardness regions respectively formed under the mounting face inside the tool body (110), each of the reduced hardness regions having the first threaded hole (158) formed therein and a hardness lower than the hardness of the tool body (110). In one embodiment, the reduced hardness regions are formed by embedding a right cylindrical column (156) into a straight hole (154) of round cross section formed under each mounting face of the tool body (110).

The rotor comprises a rotor base body (2) with locations (6), which are formed on the periphery thereof in an interspaced manner and which are suited for fitting the rotor with functional elements (7). The invention is characterized in that the rotor base body (2) is comprised of a first, radially outer base body element (3) and of a second radially inner base body element (4). When the rotor (1) is not rotating, a jointing pressure prevails along an encircling joint line (5), which is formed between both base body elements, and the radially inner base body element (4) is made of a material having a higher modulus of elasticity than that of the radially outer base body element (3).

Embodiments of the present invention include composite articles comprising at least a first region and a second region and methods of making such articles. The first region may comprise a first composite material, wherein the first region comprises less than 5 wt. % cubic carbides by weight, and the second region may comprise a second composite material, wherein the second composite material differs from the first composite material in at least one characteristic. The composite article may additionally comprise at least one coolant channel. In certain embodiments, the first and second composite material may individually comprise hard particles in a binder, wherein the hard particles independently comprise at least one of a carbide, a nitride, aboride, a silicide, an oxide, and solid solutions thereof and the binder comprises at least one metal selected from cobalt, nickel, iron and alloys thereof. In specific embodiments, the first composite material and the second composite material may individually comprise metal carbides in a binder, such as a cemented carbide.
