The present invention provides a method for the extraction and isolation of soluble arabinoxylan products from cereal grain. Preferably, such soluble arabinoxylan product is any one of soluble arabinoxylan, arabinoxylan-oligosaccharides, xylose, arabinose, ferulic acid and mixtures thereof. Said method comprises partial debranning of whole cereal grains to obtain partially debranned cereal grains followed by roller milling of said partially debranned cereal grains to obtain cereal bran. The method further comprises the mashing of at least part of said cereal bran in water optionally involving the treatment of the mash with any one of an enzyme preparation, an acid, a base, a peroxide or combinations thereof, either simultaneously or sequentially, to solubilize and optionally depolymerize a fraction of the arabinoxylan comprised in said cereal bran. Preferably, said treatment is done with an enzyme preparation containing an endoxylanase. The method further comprises the separation from said mash of a solubilized fraction, which comprises at least part of the solubilized soluble arabinoxylan products.

The invention relates to processes for the reduction of the fibre content in fibre-containing oilseeds. The reduction in fibre is achieved by employing electrostatic separation and/or sieving-wind sifting separation. The invention also relates to protein- and fibre-enriched fractions of oilseeds obtained according to the processes of the invention, and the use of these fractions in animal feed and food, in particle boards/fibre panels, in the production of protein concentrates and/or isolates and as fuel.

An economical, yet effective technique for fumigating grain and other particulate foodstuffs involves the passage through the grain or the like of a carrier gas containing phosphine. The concentration of the phosphine in the carrier gas is within the range of from 4 to 200 micrograms of phosphine per litre. The flow of the gas is at a constant linear velocity within the grain, and the gas leaves the grain mass at a velocity of from 0.5x10 to about 2 x 10 metres per second. In addition, fumigation of grain in a storage facility having a plurality of grain silos (13) is effected from a single source (10) of a gaseous fumigant. The single source of gaseous fumigant is connected to a gas supply duct (11), to which gas inlet ports of the silos are also connected. The connection between each gas inlet port and the duct is provided with a respective valve (14) and a respective orifice plate (15), which is adjusted so that the pressure drop across the plate into the silo is substantially greater than the pressure drop across any other component between the gas source and the silo. With apparatus arranged in this manner, the flow rate of gaseous fumigant through the grain-containing silos in the facility suffers only a minor perturbation when a valve between the duct and a silo is opened or closed. This minor perturbation can be readily compensated by maintaining the gas pressure in the duct at a constant value.

The preparation of the broken and partially fermented wheat kernels is carried out taking the kernels from hopper (4) to hopper (6) where they are kept to partially germinate, the wheat kernels being then broken up in (10) and (11) and finally partially fermented and pasteurized in container (14). The obtained product contains all the grain components and may be used directly in human alimentation.

A method of treating a crop kernel prior to milling to improve millability, which includes the step of exposing the crop kernel to one or more plant hormones is provided. Typically, the crop kernel is a cereal such as wheat. The plant hormone is selected from the group consisting of auxins, gibberellins and abscisic acid. The method further includes the step of exposing the crop kernel to an enzyme. Typically the enzyme is a plant cell-wall degrading enzyme such as xylanase, lipase and cellulase. Also provided are methods of production of flour, food products and compositions. A particular application of this method is the optimisation of milling performance for the production of high quality flour.
