    摘要: A container or can (10) having a body (12) and end portion (32) which include free ends (18 and 38) comprising plastic materials and which are joined and sealed by cooperatively curling juxtapositioned free ends. The method and apparatus of the invention forms the body portion (12) with an opening surrounded by a free end (18) suitable for curling and forms the end portion with a central portion surrounded by a free end suitable for curling. The container body (12) and end portion (32) are joined by juxtaposing their free ends (18 and 38) for forming a plurality of walls, then the plastic in at least one of the free ends is provided in a condition at the time of curling which allows stress and related elastic strain and memory to be imparted to the plastic, followed by curling with a curling tool (50) to intimately engage the ends and concurrently curl the perimeters thereof into a tightly curled configuration (48), wherein at least the one free end includes internal stress and related strain and memory for providing a seam of integrity and reliability.

The rim (26) of the inner wall also can include a sharply curvilinear configuration which provides a compressible and resilient interfering surface that nests tightly against the underside portion of a projecting bead or shoulder on the container neck to thereby provide significant interference upon initial removal of the cap (10).

    摘要: A device for forming a rolled rim (R) at the unrimmed mouth of the body of a container (C) having a body which is fabricated from a sheet of an expanded thermoplastic material, the device including a first member with a first annular rim-forming surface (150), and a second member which is reciprocable relative to the first member. The second member has a second annular rim-forming surface (154) which forms a generally closed rim-forming chamber with the first annular rim-forming surface (150) when the second member is in a first position relative to the first member, the second member being reciprocable to a second position in which the first annular surface and the second annular surface are separated to permit the withdrawal of a container (C) with a rolled rim (R) at the mouth from the first member. The device further includes a transfer mechanism for inserting a container with an unrimmed mouth (UC) over a frustoconical portion of the first member (124) to position such container to have a rim rolled in the mouth thereof in such rim-forming chamber and to withdraw a container (C) with a rolled rim (R) at the mouth from the first member. The rim-forming chamber is heated and there need be no relative rotation between the rim-forming chamber and the container during the forming of a rolled rim (R) in the container (C).

    摘要: The present invention relates to a method of reforming the end portion and sealing surface of a blow molded plastic container neck finish. The method includes the steps of directing energy from a non-contact heater (18) onto an annular end portion of a container neck finish (12) so as to heat the end portion to its softening temperature while leaving the remainder of the neck finish relatively unheated, and then engaging the annular end portion with an unheated forming tool (24) so as to reform and cool the end sealing surface of the neck finish (12). Plastic containers, as well as apparatuses for reforming a blow molded plastic container, are also disclosed.
