The gripping unit further comprises a plurality of gripping fingers that are selectively moveable between a releasing position and a gripping position. The nozzle is positioned such that the jet of compressed gas may interchangeably engage the tire and wheel rim interfaces on different-sized wheel and tire combinations when placed on the wheel holder, without repositioning the nozzle. The nozzle may be used with two or more different-sized wheel rim and tire combinations without changing the nozzle location. The wheel servicing machine may also include a tire changing machine, and the nozzle may be fixed to a base on the tire changing machine.

A tire mounting apparatus (10) for mounting a tire (12) on a rim (14) includes a robot having at least one articulated member (40 42) moveable in three dimensions along a selectable one of a plurality of programmable predetermined paths. A CPU (34) selectively executes one of the paths stored in memory. A bead mounting tool (38) is attachable to the member (40, 42) for movement along the selected path. A workpiece support positions the rim with respect to the robot and the tire (12) with respect to the rim (14). A signal is sent to the robot corresponding to a size of the workpiece. The CPU (34) selects one of the paths corresponding to the signal. The robot includes sensors (62) for measuring load on the articulated member (40, 42). The control program includes a monitoring function for stopping movement of the tool (38) in response to a load greater than a predetermined value. A clamp member (24) prevents rotation of the tire on the rim.
