A piston and cylinder assembly is provided having an elongate rod-like piston (1) slidably housed in a bore (2) in a cylinder (3) to project from an open end (4) of the cylinder bore (2) and a gland assembly (5) for sealing between the cylinder bore (2) and the outer surface (6) of the piston (1). The gland assembly (5) includes a through bored housing member (7) secured at one open end (7a) to the cylinder at its open end (4) to extend around the piston (1) with the respective bores (2, 70) extending coaxially and opening into one another and with the housing memberbore (7b) being larger in diameter than the cylinder bore (2) and piston (1) to define an annular chamber (8) around the outer surface of the piston (1), which chamber (8) is bounded at its innermost end, immediately adjacent the cylinder bore end (4), by a first end wall (9) extending generally transversely to the longitudinal axes of the housing member and cylinder bores (7b, 2) and at its outermost end by a second end wall (11) extending generally transversely to the longitudinal axes of the housing member and cylinder bores (7b, 2) and provided on an annular end closure means (12) removably attachable to the housing member (7) at the other open end of the housing member (7). A flexible annular guide ring (14), split peripherally in the direction of its longitudinal axis, is provided locatable in the chamber (8) around and in sliding guide contact with the piston outer surface (6) adjacent the first end wall (9), and a flexible annular seal ring (16) locatable in the chamber (8) around and in sliding sealing contact with the piston outer surface (6) between the guide ring (14) and the second end wall (11). The arrangement is such that the seal and guide rings (16, 14) may be entered into and removed from the chamber (8) by means of the removable end closure means (12) and in operation of the piston and cylinder assembly, with pressure fluid operatively present in the cylinder bore, the seal ring (16) is urged into sealing contact with the piston outer surface (6) by being compressed between the second end wall (11) and fluid pressure acting on an innermost end face of the seal ring (16) through the peripheral split in the guide ring (14).

Durch die Ausbildung als Baueinheit kann der Schrä gaufzug nachträglich an einem Verkehrsmittel montiert werden, wobei durch die seitliche Verschwenkung der Hebeplattform in die Ruhestellung die Tritte des Verkehrs mittels zum Aus- und Einsteigen für nicht behinderte Perso nen frei bleiben.

A lifting mechanism for a vehicle tail-board or other platform comprises at least one set of two main levers 12, 13 each of which essentially provides three non-colinear pivots defining a triangle, and the two triangles are substantially identical. Corresponding pairs of pivots 12a and 13a, and 12b and 13b, are respectively interconnected by a tilting lever 14 and a link 16, and corresponding pivots 12c and 13c are interconnected by being connected to spaced fixed locations on the tail-board 10. A hydraulic jack 23 is connected between a pin 26 on lever 12 and a fixed bracket 18, which also carries pivot 12a, and operates to move the tail-board in a horizontal attitude between the group and the vehicle floor level, and a second jack 22 is connected between bracket 18 and a crank arm 21 of lever 14 and operates, when the platform is at vehicle floor level, to move lever 13 bodily in an arcuate path about pviots 12a, and 12b and 12c to swing the tail-board into a vertical attitude. A ramp 35 pivotally attached to the tail-board is movable into positions aligned with and at right angles to the tail-board to facilitate loading, to prevent a load from slipping or rolling off, and to form an upright extension of the tail-board.

Vehicle mounted load lifting and lowering apparatus comprises a parallel arm linkage (14,16,17) pivotally mounted at one end thereof on part (11) of a vehicle and arranged above the vehicle floor (13). A drop arm (18) is pivotally mounted on and extends below the other end of the parallel arm linkage. A platform (23) is mounted on the drop arm (18) at or adjacent the lower end thereof and is pivotable about a horizontal axis between a load carrying position and a stowed position. A ram (19) is expandable and contractable to rotate the parallel arm linkage between the first position in which the platform lies at ground level, a second position in which the platform is supported at the level of the vehicle floor and a third position in which, with the platform in the stowed position, the apparatus is stowed above the vehicle floor.
