A method for producing a carboxylic acid, characterized in that it comprises reacting an oily solution of an alicyclic alcohol with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst containing a compound of a metal belonging to Group 6 of the Periodic Table in a heterogeneous solution system. The method allows the production of a carboxylic acid from an alicyclic alcohol in a high yield with good efficiency under mild conditions with easy, simple, and safe operations without the need of a solvent removing operation after the completion of the reaction, and the practice of the method is almost free from the adverse effect or the toxicity on the environment or a human body.

The resultant co-salt product will be easy to blend with other products to produce dietary supplements. These novel co-salt products may also tablet very well and may be added to current dietary supplement tablets.

Aliphatic carboxylic acids of formulae (Ib) R1-COOH(Ia) and R2-COOH wherein R1 is tertiary C¿4-20?-alkyl and R?2¿ is selected from hydrogen and C¿1-6?-alkyl, or R?1 and R2¿ together are -(CH¿2?)n-with n = 3 to 10, are produced by oxidizing an aliphatic or alicyclic ketone of formula (II), wherein R?1 and R2¿ are as defined above, with molecular oxygen in the presence of a soluble manganese(II) compound. The process has a high selectivity and is carried out under very mild conditions. It is especially useful for the production of dicarboxylic acids such as adipic acid from cyclic ketones.
