Novel solid salt compositions are described containing, for example, tetraaryl- and triarylaralykyl-phosphonium and arsonium cations and tetraaryl- and tetraaryloxy-boranates and aluminates and polyanionic metal oxide surfaces, for example, as anions. The salts are useful for extracting aromatics and olefins from paraffinic hydrocarbon and aqueous liquid feedstreams and from vapor and gas feedstreams by absorption.

Mixed aromatic/aliphatic oxyaluminum acylates are provided which have utility for the manufacture of greases without generating by-product alcohol and without requiring the use of water and wherein the ratio of the number of aromatic radicals to the number of aliphatic radicals ranges from 2:3 to 19:1. Processes are provided for making such compounds including a continuous process. Also premix compositions useful in grease manufacture are provided along with methods for preparing new greases therefrom.

A modified lithium aluminium hydride type reducing agent is useful for reducing organic compounds having a carbonyl group-(ketone group of aldehyde group) in their structure to the corresponding alcohols. It is obtained by reacting one equivalent of lithium aluminium hydride with one equivalent of an optically active N-substituted ephedrine of the formula, (wherein R, is a C i -C 4 alkyl group or benzyl group and Ph is phenyl group) and two equivalents of an N-substituted aniline of the formula, (wherein R 2 is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group or phenyl group, and Ph is phenyl group). The reducing agent is particularly useful for reducing 2-acetyl-5, 8-dimethoxy-3, 4-dihydronaphthalene to the corresponding 2-(1'-hydroxy)ethyl compound, and, by selecting a particular modified aluminium hydride the unsymmetrical ketone can be reduced to selectively produce either an alcohol in which the asymmetric carbon atom bonded to the hydroxy group is in R-configuration or an alcohol in which said asymmetric carbon atom is in S-configuration.

An improved method is disclosed for continuously purifying crude aluminum alkyls containing solid contaminants such as aluminum particles comprising passing crude aluminum alkyls into a first holding vessel, the contents of said vessel being continuously passed under pressure through a tubular filter having an upstream inner surface and a downstream outer surface, solids-containing aluminum alkyls passing through said tubularfilter returning to the holding vessel, and purified aluminum alkyls passing through the filter wall exiting through the downstream outer surface, and recovered; monitoring the solids content of the holding vessel and ceasing crude aluminum alkyl flow into said holding vessel when solid contents reach undesirably high levels, thereafter passing said crude aluminum alkyls into an alternate holding vessel and filter, then further passing the contents of said first holding vessel through said tubular filter until substantially all remaining aluminum alkyls have passed through the filter to recovery, and purging the contents of said first holding vessel before filtration is resumed.

High purity organometallic compounds can be obtained by the process which comprises subjecting an organometallic compound in a liquid state under stirring to preliminary oxidation or hydrolysis in a proportion of about 0.1 to 50% by weight of the organometallic compound to form solid reaction products, and separating by distillation the unreacted organometallic compound from the solid reaction products to recover the purified organometallic compound; and high purity metallic compounds such as a solid metallic hydroxide or oxide can be obtained by the process which comprises following the process as mentioned above, oxidizing or hydrolyzing completely the recovered purified organometallic compound.
