For reinforcing of forming materials of the cold setting type such as concrete or various cross linking plastic materials, solid or foamed, is provided a thermoplastic fibre material, the fibres of which have a surface layer of mineral particles which are partly and only partly embedded in the thermoplastic fibre material, to which the particles are firmly weld bonded, such that the exposed outer particle surfaces are firmly bondable to the forming material. Hereby the mineral particles will form a rigid connection between the forming material and a central fibre core or layer of high tensile strength, whereby the thermoplastic fibres are effectively surface bonded to the forming material so as to show a high reinforcing effect.

A process for producing a drawn product of a crystalline polymer having high tenacity and high modulus, which comprises compressing a gel-like material prepared from a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solvent (i.e. a gel-like sheet material (A) consisting of gel-like particles of a crystalline polymer and a solvent which is prepared by cooling a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solvent, or a gel-like film material (B) which is prepared by casting a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solventl at a temperature lowerthan the temperature at which the gel-like material is dissolved, whereby removing a part of the solvent contained in the gel-like material, and drawing the compressed material, preferably using a drawing die. The drawn product is particularly useful as a tension member for optical fiber cable.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers are prepared by forming a 2-15 weight % solution of PAN of M w at least 500,000, extruding, cooling to below the gel temperature, extracting and drying. At least one of the gel fiber, the fiber containing extraction solvent and the dried gel is stretched. The product PAN fibers have a M w at least 500,000 (e.g. 1,000,000-4,000,000 or 1,500,000-2,500,000), a tenacity at least 5 g/den (e.g., at least 7 g/den) and a secant modulus at least 100 g/den (e.g. at least 125 g/den).

C-shaped carbon or polymeric fibers, e.g. melt spun from mesophase pitch, are used as micro-molds to form nested dual fibers comprising the said carbon or polymer fibers and ceramic fibers. By wetting the shaped fibers in a wet chemical precursor for the ceramic, and subsequently heat treating in an oxygen-free environment, ceramic fibers of various compositions can be formed in the fibers used as micro-molds, thus for instance yielding carbon-ceramic nested fibers, in which the ceramic fibers are formed with non-circular transverse cross-sectional configurations. The fibers used as micro-molds can be removed, leaving only the ceramic fibers, by burning away the non-ceramic fibers in an oxygen-containing environment or by mechanically stripping them from the ceramic fibers.

A stretchable wholly aromatic polyamide fiber which (A) is composed of a wholly aromatic polyamide containing at least 85 mole%, based on the entire recurring units, of m-phenylene isophthalamide units as a main component, (B) does not substantially contain an aprotic polar solvent, (C) has an average denier size of 50 to 50,000, (D) when stretched to two times at the glass transition temperature of the wholly aromatic polyamide, has a maximum heat shrinkage under a fixed load of at least 30%. A stretched wholly aromatic polyamide fiber which has the same properties with (A), (B) and (C), and (D) has a maximum heat shrinkage under a fixed load of at least 20% and (E) is substantially amorphous. The present invention provides a stretchable and stretched wholly aromatic polyamide composite fiber containing an inorganic pieces and processes for preparing the above fibers.

Solutions of intermediate molecular weight polymers from about 200,000 to about 4,000,000, such as polyethylene, in a relatively non-volatile solvent are extruded through an aperature at constant concentration and thereafter stretched at a ratio of at least about 3:1 prior to cooling to form a first gel. The first gels are extracted with a volatile solvent to form a second gel, and the second gel is dried to form a low porosity xerogel. Stretching occurs with any one or more of the first gel, second gel or xerogel. The polyethylene products produced by our process include products having a molecular weight between about 200,000 and about 4,000,000 a tenacity of at least about 13 grams/denier, a modulus of at least about 350 gram/denier, a porosity of less than 10% by volume, a crystalline orientation function of at least about 0.95, and a main melting temperature of at feast about 140°C.
