A deep dyeing helically crimped-conjugate yam is made by high speed melt spinning, preferably with an in-line draw. The drawing step increases the degree of crimp, and the resulting yarn dyes deeper than conventional yams and has greater dye stability than it would have without the drawing step.

Polyester conjugate crimped yarns prepared by conjugate spinning (1) an A component substantially comprising polybutylene terephthalate and (2) a B component substantially comprising polyethylene terephthalate at a weight ratio of 30:70 to 70:30 in a side-by-side or eccentric sheath-core arrangement, rendered crimpable by false twisting to a degree of crimpability TC 10 of 8% or more when subjected to a boiling water treatment under a load of 10 mg/de. The polyester conjugate crimped yarn can be obtained by subjecting the conjugate yarn to single-heater false twisting under the conditions which satisfy the following relations: where TW is the number of false twists (T/m); De is the total denier of the yarn after false twisting: T is the temperature in °C of the false twister heater; [η]B is the intrinsic viscosity of the B component. Stretch woven fabrics having a stretch percentage of 15% or more can be obtained by weaving the above-mentioned polyester conjugate crimped yarns.

A dyed polyester fiber composite structure having an enhanced brilliance and/or color depth, comprises (A) a dyed porous polyester fiber which has been produced (1) by preparing a polyester resin from a dicarboxylic acid component and a glycol component in the presence of a pore-forming agent containing 0.3 to 3 molar % of at least one phosphorus compound based on the molar amount of the dicarboxylic acid component, (2) by converting the polyester resin to a polyester fiber in which fine particles of the pore-forming agent are dispersed, by treating the polyester fiber with an aqueous alkali soludion so that at least 2% of the weight of the fiber is removed and a number of fine pores are formed in the fiber and (4) by dying the porous polyester fiber; and (8) a coating layer on the peripheral surface of the dyed porous polyester fiber, comprising a polymeric material having a smaller refractive index than that of the porous polyester fiber.

A thick and thin fibre has at least two axially-continuous grooves per filament with the entrance widths of the grooves lying between 0.2 and 4 µm and the depths between 0.1 and 1.8 µm. Such a fibre is made by dissolving out the easily-soluble polymer from a drawn composite fibre comprised of two thermoplastic polymer components having different solubilities. The fibre is of a silky nature and knitted and woven fabrics made therefrom have properties characteristic of silk fabrics.

An easily splittable deep-dyeing conjugate filament is melt-spun by merging molten sub-streams of incompatible polymers outside the spinneret to form a combined stream, then quenching the combined stream to form the conjugate filament. The filament is preferably drawn prior to winding, increasing the crimp level and increasing the dye stability of the filament.
