When one control mode is being implemented in the corresponding engine operating region, the control mode is forcibly switched to the other control mode when the engine enters a predetermined transition state. In a fuel supply system for a direct injection engine (507) of the present invention, equipped with a primary fuel injector (509) that injects fuel directly into the cylinder (507b) of the direct injection engine (507) and a supercharger (534) that increases the intake air quantity of the engine (507), a secondary fuel injector (530) is installed in addition to the primary fuel injector (509). In a specified engine load area, fuel is supplied using the primary fuel injector (509) and the secondary fuel injector (530). Even though the fuel quantity injected from the primary fuel injector (509) into the cylinder (507b) is limited, the fuel supply system for direct injection engine constructed as above can increase the engine output because the fuel insufficiency can be supplied by the secondary fuel injector (530).

A compression piston (34) is located in the compression cylinder (22) and an expansion piston (36) is located in the expansion cylinder (24). Each piston is connected to a crankschaft (26, 28). A rotary prechamber tube (44), having two, constant volume, combustion chambers (48) defined therein, is positioned within a housing (14) coupled to the engine block (12). Induction and expansion ports respectively forming passageways communicating the compression cylinder (22) and the expansion cylinder (24) with the chambers (48) of the tube (44). The tube (44) itself is rotatably supported in the housing (14) and oriented with its axis (46) being generally transverse to cylinder axes. The engine (10) is operated such that the chambers (48) are successively brought into communication via the induction port with the compression cylinder (22), separated from communication with said compression cylinder (22), brought into a position to receive fuel from said fuel injector (62) and to initiate combustion, and then brought into communication via the expansion port with the expansion cylinder (24) to complete combustion.

Multiple intake valves operatively associated in a common combustion chamber are advantageous in that the design achieves high output for an internal combustion engine. The subject modified cylinder head utilizes the advantages available in a multiple intake valve system, but further enhances the design by reducing heat rejection. In the subject modified cylinder head, three intake valves (38, 40, 42) having corresponding intake valve ports (26, 28, 30) and one exhaust valve (68) having an exhaust valve port (66) are operatively associated in a common combustion chamber. A reduction in heat rejection is achieved through a relationship between the cross-sectional areas of the intake and exhaust valve ports (26, 28, 30, 66). The intake valve ports (26, 28, 30) are constructed so that their cross-sectional area is larger than about 69 % of the combined cross-sectional area of the intake and the exhaust ports (26, 28, 30, 66).
