The engine (10) includes a main cylinder (25) having a compression chamber (26) at one end and a piston (31) that is movable along the length of the cylinder (25) and which connects to a crankshaft (23) for the engine (10). A fuel delivery system (72) delivers a combustible mixture of fuel and air through a fuel delivery valve (73) into the combustion chamber (26) at a sonic velocity of flow such that the fuel is substantially atomized into the air of the combustible mixture delivered to the combustion chamber (26). The combustible mixture is ignited by an igniter (160) within the combustion chamber (26) to urge the piston (31) along the cylinder for driving the crankshaft (23) of the engine (10).

A high temperature air-fuel mixture field is formed in the combustion chamber, and has a fuel concentration which causes no self-ignition within the combustion chamber. A mixture charge injector is disposed to supply to the air-fuel mixture field a mixture charge which has a fuel concentration higher than that in the air-fuel mixture field and contains fuel and a fluid containing air, at least a part of the fuel being vaporized.

It is known that enriching fuel with oxygen improves combustion and thus reduces fuel consumption, improves performance and reduces pollutant and soot particle emission. In order to prevent the air admixed into the fuel before the air is introduced into the combustion chamber from forming air bubbles in the supply pipe, the fuel-air mixture is selectively degassed depending on the size of the air bubbles. The fuel is fed by a feed pump (4), through a suction pipe (2), from a tank (1) into an apparatus (3), and from there into an internal combustion engine (5). Air is admixed by device (6). The apparatus (3) contains a degassing chamber (7) with a floater (8) that closes the lower admission (10) with a sealing cone (9) and that controls with an actuating pin (11) an inlet valve (12) depending on the level of fuel in the chamber.

Die Einrichtung umfaßt eine Brennstoffdosiervorrichtung und eine Flügelzellenpumpe (7) zur Förderung eines Teilluftstromes (6), der den Brennstoff durch Transportleitungen (20) in das Ansaugrohr der Brennkraftmaschine fördert. Das Einspritzventil (10) spritzt den dosierten Brennstoff stromab des Lufteintritts in eine Kammer der Flügelzellenpumpe (5) ab.
