A method and system is disclosed for purposefully modifying the accessibility of information encoded upon an optical medium (1150) for indicating a state or history of an item associated therewith. In one embodiment, the modifying of the optical medium (1150) includes a device (1170) for purposefully damaging the optical medium (1150) when the information is initially accessed so that upon subsequent attempts at accessing the information on the optical medium (1150), the previous access to the information can be detected by the access errors purposefully generated. Thus, the present invention provides an effective technique for limiting illegal duplication and/or use of, e.g., software, movies, and music on compact disks and digital versatile disks. Moreover, the present invention is also useful for verifying the authenticity of persons and/or financial transaction cards during financial transactions.

A push-pull signal is detected from a disk-shaped storage medium on which wobbling grooves are formed as recording tracks and address information is recorded by forming pre-pits on lands between adjacent grooves. The detected push-pull signal is compared with a reference voltage thereby generating a land pre-pit detection signal. Of pulses included in the land pre-pit detection signal, those pulses having a small pulse width are regarded as noise pulses and removed thereby obtaining a corrected land pre-pit detection signal. The number of pulses included in the land pre-pit detection signal is counted, and the reference voltage is controlled in accordance with the counted number of pulses.

Methods for manufacturing optical discs with purposefully provided errors therein are disclosed, wherein the error instances can be used to identify the authenticity of the optical disc. Additionally, methods for determining the authenticity of an optical disc are disclosed, wherein values derived from descriptors of errors found on the disc (536) are compared with corresponding known values indicative of an authentic disc (540) for determining whether the disc was legitimately manufactured or not (548). Such methods may utilize errors that are correctable, uncorrectable, trackable, and/or untrackable. An end user (or the end user's optical reading laser) may be instructed to purposefully alter a portion of the disc in a predetermined manner (516) so that an unauthorized copy of the disc is easily discoverable by, e.g., activation of an authentication program on the disc or accessible via a network such as the Internet (508). Embodiments of the present invention may be used to manufacture optical discs with predetermined limits on the accessibility of the data thereon.

A copy protected compact disc (200) preferably is provided with a first session that includes the standard digital audio content (204), in a format that is readable by a conventional CD player. It also includes a second session that is configured to provide a user computer with access to an alternative form of the same digital audio content (210), but that is subject to a digital rights protocol, such as a protocol that requires a key in order to play or copy the audio content. Copy protection technology is further provided on the compact disc in order to frustrate a user computer from identifying the standard digital audio content (204) as such and thereby directing the computer to the second session and the alternative audio content (210). The copy protection technology is preferably a configuration of the control data that is located in the lead in area (202) of the compact disc.
