It would be advantageous to provide a drive unit having an improved torque 5 transmission from the rotatable parts of the drive unit to the disc. It would also be desirable to allow a better guiding of the disc into a centered position around the axis of rotation from the supporting surface. To better address one or more of these concerns, an embodiment of the invention provides a drive unit for a data medium, comprising a turntable and a clamp for clamping a data medium onto the turntable, wherein the turntable 10 and the clamp can be moved with respect to each other from an unclamped to a clamped position, and, in the clamped position, the turntable and the clamp comprise a form-fit torque transmission between them.

An optical information reader for writing/reading of multi-layer optical disks utilizing light beam from the light source directed to optical carder by the lens and receiving reflected or fluorescent light is described. An optical reader includes the device for the reception of reflected of fluorescent light and the detector of the disk writing/reading layer with the aim to determine a required value of compensation or correction of spherical aberration compare to the calculated one. Optical reader includes also a piezo-ceramic optical element (1, 2, 3, 4) resided in a light beam that is directed from light source to the carder. This piezo-element has a phase difference between central (1, 2) and peripheral (3, 4) zones that depend on sign and value of voltage applied to it. A piezo-ceramic device reduces aberrations by using the phase differences change between its central and peripheral zones as result of current change of record layer thickness.

Computer systems may loose data when a failure occurs within a system. To counteract such loss of data a backup system may be employed. Common backup systems make a copy of either of the data on a storage device or the data, which has changed, on a storage device. The process of backing up data may involve storing a relatively large amount of data and so is commonly done infrequently, such as once per day. If a computer's data is backed up only once per day, several hours of data may be lost if a computer system falls. Embodiments of the present invention may be used to prevent this type of data loss by backing up more frequently. In order to back up more frequently less data at a time is backed up. Instead of the data undergoing a wholesale backup infrequently, embodiments of the present invention form a timed log of the storage writes performed by the computer system. The log provides a running picture of activity to the computer storage system. By preserving the log, for example storing it at a remote site through a network connection, the state of the computer can be recreated with any desired granularity, by using the log entries to recreate the state of the data within the computer system at any desired time.

In other embodiments, the arrangement (Fig. 12) utilizes existing brake teeth of a tape cassette reel to prevent rewinding after a predetermined amount of the video has been viewed.

A method and system is disclosed for purposefully modifying the accessibility of information encoded upon an optical medium (1150) for indicating a state or history of an item associated therewith. In one embodiment, the modifying of the optical medium (1150) includes a device (1170) for purposefully damaging the optical medium (1150) when the information is initially accessed so that upon subsequent attempts at accessing the information on the optical medium (1150), the previous access to the information can be detected by the access errors purposefully generated. Thus, the present invention provides an effective technique for limiting illegal duplication and/or use of, e.g., software, movies, and music on compact disks and digital versatile disks. Moreover, the present invention is also useful for verifying the authenticity of persons and/or financial transaction cards during financial transactions.
