According to the invention, a material layer for a single-layer solid oxide fuel cell comprises fused nanoparticles being selected to provide reaction sites for hydrogen oxidation and oxygen reduction as well as to provide for ionic transport in said layer. The surface of at least one side of said layer is engraved (preferable both sides are engraved) to increase the surface area of the fuel cell layer.
