The invention relates to an electric motor for a small electric appliance, comprising a rotor and a stator, a coil for the generation of a magnetic field; and a first magnet arrangement having a first permanent magnet which, by interaction with a magnetic field generated using the coil, generates a force for the excitation of a rotary movement of the rotor. In accordance with the invention, a second magnet arrangement is provided which has at least one second permanent magnet which is arranged such that a translatory oscillatory movement of the rotor is effected by the Lorentz force acting in the field of the second permanent magnet on the conductors of the coil through which current flows. The invention furthermore relates to a small appliance having an electric motor in accordance with the invention and to a method for the generation of a translatory oscillatory movement of the rotor of an electric motor.

The coil has first and second coil parts 15 and 16 arranged circumferentially in front and back of the permanent magnet 13, and a frequency of an alternate current applied to the first and second coil parts 15 and 16 is made to accord with a resonance frequency of the capsule device 10 generated by a back and forth vibration of the permanent magnet 13. Thereby, a self-propelled, mobile capsule device 10 which is downsized, compact and efficient and a control method thereof can be provided.

In a cryogenic split Stirling refrigerator, the compressor and displacer are driven by linear drive motors. Each compressor linear drive motor has a plurality of radial permanent magnets 44, 46 mounted to each compressor piston 22, 24. A tapered collet 56 expands an expanding sleeve 42 against the magnets and compresses a sleeve 38 against the piston. A housing 34 hermetically seals the gas about the armature and supports the coil assembly 76, 78. The displacer drive motor includes an axial permanent magnet 202 mounted to the displacer drive piston 192. It is surrounded by a housing 210 which hermetically seals the spring volume surrounding the magnet. The drive coils 216, 218 are supported on that housing. The coils are surrounded by flux returns 222, 224 which can be adjusted to minimize radial forces on the drive piston.

Various embodiments of the present invention comprise linear-resonant vibration modules that can be incorporated in a wide variety of appliances, devices, and systems to provide vibrational forces. The vibrational forces are produced by linear oscillation of a weight or member, in turn produced by rapidly alternating the polarity of one or more driving electromagnets. Feedback control is used to maintain the vibrational frequency of linear-resonant vibration module at or near the resonant frequency for the linear-resonant vibration module. Linear-resonant vibration modules can be designed to produce vibrational amplitude/frequency combinations throughout a large region of amplitude/frequency space.
