摘要： @ One-way subscription television service control allows the subscribers to subscribe in advance to a variety of programming orto select programming on a pay-per-view basis. This involves coding program identification information (20) according to preselected program characteristics and transmitting this information concurrently with programming being transmitted having the said program characteristics to all program subscribers. This is received and read into a subscription table memory (10) at every subscriber address. Individual program subscription information (40) is coded for each subscriber address according to programming selections made by each subscriber and is periodically transmitted to all subscribers. The program subscription information for each subscriber address which corresponds to that subscriber address coded with program subscription information being transmitted at a given time is received and written into the memory (10) where it is compared with the program identification information which has been read into the memory (10). As a result individual subscriber program receivers are enabled so that each subscriber is able to receive programming then being transmitted in response to correspondance between the program subscription information and the program identification information.

摘要： In order to control subscriber access to selected television programmes in a CATV system, non-standard horizontal synchronizing pulses are generated (13, 15, 17) having a greater amplitude and either a higher or lower pulse repetition rate than the contained horizontal synchronizing pulses. These are selectively added (19 ... 23, 27 ... 33) to those television programmes to be controlled. As a result, the television receiver of a nonpaying subscriber interprets the non-standard pulses as being valid horizontal synchronizing pulses thereby preventing the receiver from synchronizing its line scanning with that of the television programme, rendering the picture produced therefrom unviewable.

摘要： © A music delivery system permitting a subscriber to select from among a plurality of available music selections, particular selections that the subscriber wishes to hear at any time. The plurality of music selections are "played" at a central "jukebox" facility (110). They are frequency multiplexed onto one or more communication channels (114) that are typically used to carry video information, such as a cable television channel. The video channel information is distributed to individual subscribers either via unused channels of a cable television system, by direct broadcast at commercial television frequencies, by direct satellite transmission to a subscriber, or by some other means. A subscriber uses a converter box to demultiplex and thereby select a desired musical selection for demodulation. Demodulation can take place in the subscriber's television or in some other apparatus. Music selections are selected in a similar fashion to the manner in which particular channels of a cable television system are selected for video viewing. Each music selection is on an audio sub-channel of a video channel. The music on the sub-channels is continuously played in such a way that any specific selection can be chosen at any time.

摘要： A scrambled television program that is received and recorded in a scrambled fashion includes program code and corresponding key codes for use in descrambling the recorded scrambled signal. The program codes and key codes are retained in a memory so that upon reproduction the key code can be read out of the memory and fed to a descramble pattern generator for descrambling the reproduced scrambled signal. By placing the program code and key code at the end of the scrambled program the scrambled signal cannot be descrambled until the entire program has been first received. By dividing the memory into permanent and temporary memories and adding an identification code to the transmitted scrambled signal, which selects either the permanent or temporary memory, and counting the number of times that the temporary memory is read out there can be a limitation placed on the number of times thatthe scrambled program is reproduced and decoded for viewing. Once a selected number is reached the contents of the temporary memory are erased, thereby preventing descrambling of the reproduced signal.

摘要： A television signal distribution system protects outgoing programs from unauthorized reception; and marks or tags the conveyed signals with a digital word identifying the class of viewers authorized to receive the program ("level of service"). Basic encription is accomplished by effectively suppressing the horizontal and vertical synchronizing information. Horizontal sync information, and the program-characterizing level of service word which is interleaved in time with prescribed horizontal sync pulses, is distributed via pulse amplitude modulation of the audio carrier. At subscriber receiving stations, the sound carrier amplitude modulation is recovered to permit level of service authorization verification; and to reconstitute the video carrier to receivable form by an amplitude modulation which is the inverse of the sync-suppressing modulation of the head end. In accordance with one feature of the present invention, a further data channel may be employed to vary subscriber service authorizations - as to permit pay-per-view billing.

摘要： An encrypted video distribution system includes a signal- originating head end for scrambling outgoing television program-bearing signals. In particular, the video content of selected lines is inverted about a reference voltage level, and the inversion reference level amplitude transmitted in pulse form during the horizontal synchronizing pulse interval. Line video inversion/non-inversion is controlled by a keyed pseudo random generator. At each authorized subscriber location, all inverted lines are restored to proper format, using the accompanying received inversion amplitude level present during horizontal sync as a reference. A pseudo random generator is included in the receiver descrambling circuitry and operates in a sequence identical to the like circuit atthe head end to identify those lines requiring video inversion.
