A sliver for spinning of the invention is a sliver for spinning having a deodorizing function and/or a heat-generating moisture absorption function, wherein a sliver for spinning formed as a bundle in which staple fibers are aligned in one direction is irradiated with an electron beam to provide an activating group and/or produce a radical on a surface of the fibers, and a compound including an ethylenic unsaturated double bond is chemically bonded to the surface of the fibers. A spun yarn of the invention is a spun yarn having a deodorizing function and/or a heat-generating moisture absorption function, including the above-described sliver for spinning that has been spun, or including the above-described sliver for spinning and a sliver other than the sliver for spinning that have been blended and spun. A fiber product of the invention has a deodorizing function and/or a heat-generating moisture absorption function, including the above-described spun yarn. Thereby, a sliver having a deodorizing function and/or a heat-generating moisture absorption function, a method for producing the sliver in an efficient and rational manner, and a spun yarn and a fiber product using the sliver are provided.

According to this invention, there are provided a process for manufacturing a water-absorbing composite comprising the steps of:
(A) spraying an aqueous monomer solution containing acrylic acid and/or its salt on a heat-raised fibrous substrate to apply droplets of the aqueous monomer solution on the fiber constituting the fibrous substrate; (B) polymerizing the monomers in the droplets to form a water-absorbing composite in which the water-absorbing resin particles adhere to the fiber; a process for manufacturing a thermally-compressed water-absorbing composite further comprising step (C): further thermally compressing the above water-absorbing composite; and a process for manufacturing a laminated water-absorbing composite further comprising step (D): laminating the water-absorbing composite and a fibrous substrate to form a laminate and then thermally compressing the laminate to thermally fuse the water-absorbing composite and the fibrous substrate.

A process for improving the flame retardancy, hygroscopic, soil release and other properties of a polymer substrate is provided in which the substrate is contacted with a suitable aqueous mixture containing a water-soluble monomer and an organic halogen-containing hydrophobic carrier compound at a temperature of between about 40°C to 100°C. Polymerization of the monomer is thereafter initiated by a chemical or physical initiator to form a polymer evenly disposed on the substrate. The flame retardancy, hygroscopic, soil release and other surface properties of the substrate are thereby improved. The mixture may be in the form of an emulsion wherein the hydrophobic carrier compound is emulsified by an appropriate agent. The invention also pertains to the improved substrates prepared in accordance with the present process.

A metal-supported nonwoven fabric is provided which enables effective synthesis of a target product when used as a catalyst in a flow reaction. The metal-supported nonwoven fabric comprises a nonwoven fabric containing polyolefin fibers or PET fibers, and metal particles. The nonwoven fabric has grafted side chains bound thereto formed of polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyacrylic acid, or a polymer containing functional groups with unshared electron pairs. The metal particles are supported by the grafted side chains via pyrrolidone groups of the polyvinylpyrrolidone, carboxy groups of the polyacrylic acid, or the functional groups with unshared electron pairs.
