An apparatus for suppressing an eluent of an aqueous sample stream including analyte ions of one charge, positive or negative, comprises a primary channel member, a first block, a first regenerant flow channel, a first charged barrier, a second block, a second regenerant flow channel, a second charged barrier, a first stationary flow-through ion exchange material, and optionally a first electrode and a second electrode. The first stationary flow-through ion exchange material comprises a polyolefin substrate having a functional polymer layer disposed thereon. The polyolefin substrate has a pore structure with a pore size ranging from about 5 microns to about 250 microns. The functional polymer layer has a thickness ranging from about 1 micron to about 20 microns, and a layer pore structure having a pore size ranging from about 1 nm to about 100 nm. The functional polymer layer comprises an ion exchange layer.

The detector has an entrance slit configured to receive the one or more spectral lines of light and a wavelength selection module comprising a digital micro-mirror device. The digital micro-mirror device is configured to redirect the one or more spectral lines of light to a flow cell. The flow cell is optically connected to the wavelength selection module.

A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining the concentration of individual components within a fluid mixture by determining the permittivity of the individual components. The method and apparatus use a reference sensor and at least one measurement sensor positioned inside the same sensor device that is immersed in the fluid mixture to be measured. Signals, such as radio frequency or microwave, are sequentially transmitted at multiple, known, constant frequencies to and reflected from both the reference and measurement sensor(s). Permittivities of the individual components are determined from these transmitted and reflected signals and information about the concentration of the individual fluids and other compounds within the fluid mixture and the density of the fluid mixture are produced. Repetitive sampling and processing of these signals allow determination and real-time monitoring of the concentration of individual components within a mixture of fluids. The present invention provides self-calibration, accurate frequency maintenance and self-selection of an operating frequency range.

A laser-excited capillary array scanner including a plurality of capillaries (21) having a parallel, side-by-side, coplanar relationship and a laser-excited confocal fluorescence detector (18) for detecting fluorescence from a selected interior volumes of each of said capillaries (21) sequentially and repetitively during electrophoresis or other separation method. The invention also relates to a method of analyzing a plurality of capillaries (21), with a single scanner (30), by scanning a plurality of capillary passages in side-by-side relationship, and periodically and repetitively detecting florescence from each capillary passage during electrophoresis or any other separation procedure.

Method of transfer of macromolecules such as nucleic acid and proteins from a chromatographic substrate to an immobilizing matrix uses as the immobilizing matrix, a charge modified microporous membrane comprising an organic microporous membrane having a charge modifying amount of a cationic charge modifying agent bonded to substantially all of the wetted surfaces of said membrane. The charge modified microporous membrane can also be a reinforced microporous membrane, preferably a porous reinforcing web impregnated with a polymeric microporous membrane. A nucleic acid or protein blotting product comprising a chromatographic matrix having the charge modified microporous membrane on a surface thereof is also provided.
