    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion improvement technique for enhancing drivability, reducing engine noise and controlling smoke when switching combustion states. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine 1 capable of switching between two combustion states having considerably different EGR rates, the adjustment of the EGR rate is carried out on the basis of oxygen concentrations of exhaust gas. A catalyst converter 52 and a reducing agent adding device 60 which adds the reducing agent to the catalyst converter 52 are provided to the exhaust passage. When changing the EGR rate to switch combustion states, the addition of the reducing agent by the reducing agent adding device 60 is prohibited. When switching combustion states, opening quantities of an EGR valve 16 and a throttle valve 13 are overshot. When switching the fuel injection control accompanied by the switching of combustion states, the switching is temporarily prohibited. At the switching, the device also switches to a regular fuel injection control while being changed gradually.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of bore flashing due to additional fuel injection. SOLUTION: A cylinder fuel injection valve 111 of each of cylinders is controlled by an electronic control unit(ECU) 30 of a diesel engine 1. An exhaust air-fuel ratio is made less than a stocchiometric air-fuel ratio by carrying out additional fuel injection to an expansion stroke or to an exhaust stroke in addition to main fuel injection from the cylinder fuel injection valve when releasing NOx absorbed from a NOx occluding reducing catalyst 70 arranged in an exhaust passage 3 by the ECU. Additional fuel injection is carried out once for every one cylinder stroke cycle in each of cylinders, the number of cycles to carry out additional fuel injection continuously with the one cylinder is limited to the number not to cause bore flashing, and a term of period to stop additional fuel injection for a period of time to sufficiently recover lubricating oil film thickness of a wall surface in the cylinder until following additional fuel injection is started after the additional fuel injection is continuously carried out is provided.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reliability of a reducing agent feeding device to regenerate an NOX occlusion reduction catalyst and prevent worsening of an exhaust property. SOLUTION: An NOX occlusion reduction catalyst 7 is arranged in the exhaust passage 3 of an engine 1 to absorb NOX contained in exhaust gas of an engine under lean air-fuel ratio operation. A liquid reducing agent (light oil) is injected in an exhaust passage situated upper stream from the catalyst 7 through a nozzle 91a and NOX is emitted from the catalyst 7 for reduction purification. A control valve 91b controls a feed of a reducing agent to the nozzle 91a. A cooling jacket 95 is arranged at the periphery of the control valve 91b and by circulating the reducing agent, fed to the control valve, through a cooling jacket 95, the control valve is cooled. Even when a control valve is arranged in a position near the exhaust passage, operation reliability of the control valve is prevented from lowering due to a heat influence and a piping to interconnect the control valve and the nozzle is shortened, whereby a stoppage of injection through a nozzle is improved and an exhaust property is prevented from worsening.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the NOX purification efficiency of an NOX occlusion reduction catalyst. SOLUTION: An NOX occlusion reduction catalyst 7 is arranged in the exhaust passage 3 of an engine 1 to absorb NOX contained in exhaust gas of an engine under lean air-fuel ratio operation. When an NOX occlusion amount of the catalyst 7 attains a predetermined decision value, a reducing agent (diesel oil) is injected in an exhaust passage on the upper stream side of the catalyst 7 through a reducing agent feed nozzle 91 and NOX is emitted from the catalyst 7 for reduction purification. The decision value is set such that an emission amount of unpurified NOX due to exudation under absorption of NOX is decreased to a predetermined low value. This constitution, since emission of unpurified NOX through discharge or exudation owing to the increase of an occlusion NOX amount is suppressed to a low value, remarkably improves the NOX purification efficiency of the whole of the NOX occlusion reduction catalyst.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress increase of a fuel consumption amount of an engine and satisfactorily regenerate a particulate filter. SOLUTION: An independent particulate filter(DPF) 40 is arranged on each exhaust port of a cylinder in a diesel engine 1. An electronic control unit(ECU) 30 of the engine performs one of the operations; phase lag of fuel injection timing into the cylinder, injection in an expansion process, throttling of intake, throttling of exhaust when an amount of the particulates captured by the DPF is increased and the engine is operated within a specified operation area, for increasing the exhaust temperature of the engine and burning the captured particulates. The ECU succeeds the regeneration operation, even when the engine operation area is out of the regeneration area during executing the regeneration, until the DPF temperature sensed by a temperature sensor 53 is reduced to a specified value or lower.
