SOLUTION: The diesel engine 1 lubricated with fuel such as diesel oil has a fuel adding means (fuel adding valve 25) for adding the fuel to a diesel catalyst 24 disposed to an exhaust system. The fuel added by the fuel adding means 25 functions as additive for NO x reduction or additive of increasing catalyst temperature in the diesel catalyst 24. Since the fuel containing soot or the like supplied to the engine body 7 of the diesel engine 1 lubricated with fuel such as diesel oil can be consumed early, the effect on a component of an injection system such as an injection pump and a fuel injection valve is mitigated. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely inject a fuel in a predetermined fuel injection mode in a fuel injection valve composed such that the injection mode is changeable. SOLUTION: The fuel injection valve is provided with a housing 3 having the first and second injection ports 4 and 5 at its tip part, a main valve element 1 housed in the housing to be liftable and a sub valve element 2 arranged between the tip part of the housing and the main valve element. When both main and sub valve elements are lifted in such a manner that they are detached from the inner wall of the housing, a fuel is injected from the first and second injection ports. Further, when the main valve element is lifted so as to detach from the housing inner wall in such a state that the sub valve element is seated thereon, the fuel is injected from the first port. Accordingly, the lifting operations of the main and sub valve elements can be controlled individually.

The suction shut-off valve 80 controls both the quantity of the fuel directed from the fuel passage P2 to the fuel passage P3 and the quantity of the fuel directed from the fuel passage P2 to the fuel passage P4 on the basis of an instruction signal from an electronic control unit(ECU).

The catalyst temperature raising means increases main injection of fuel supplied to the internal combustion engine 1, makes an air-fuel ratio close to a theoretical air-fuel ratio and adds fuel to an exhaust passage 3 in a small load area, injects additional fuel after the main injection and adds fuel in the exhaust passage 3 in a middle load area and adds fuel to the exhaust passage 3 in a large load area.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a perticulate filter furnished with catalyst from thermal deterioration by controlling the rise of the filter temperature. SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control device of an internal combustion engine is equipped with a perticlate filter carrying a NOX catalyst 17 of storage reduction type and capturing particulates contained in the exhaust gas, an ECU 9 as a filter regenerating means to remove eventually deposited particulates from the filter 18 for its regeneration, the ECU 9 as an S-poisoning judging means to compare the absorbed SOX amount with the specified value for judging whether an S-poisoning has occurred in which the catalyst absorbs SOX in the exhaust gas besides NOX absorption to result in a drop of the NOX purification rate by the catalyst, and the ECU 9 as an S-poisoning recovering means to recover the catalyst from S-poisoning, whereby if the S-poisoning judging means judges that the catalyst is in S-poisoned state, the particulates are removed by the filter regenerating means and then the catalyst is recovered from S-poisoning by the recovering means.
