PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rapidly acting dry sealant and methods for use and manufacture.SOLUTION: There are provided compositions, methods, and kits for sealing applications. The compositions are prepared by combining a first cross-linkable component with a second cross-linkable component to form a porous matrix having interstices, and combining the porous matrix with a hydrogel-forming component to fill at least some of the interstices. The compositions exhibit minimal swelling properties. A composition includes a first cross-linkable component, a second cross-linkable component that cross-links with the first cross-linkable component under reaction enabling conditions, and a hydrogel-forming component. The first and second cross-linkable component cross-link to form a porous matrix having interstices, and the hydrogel-forming component is capable of being hydrated to form a hydrogel to fill at least some of the interstices.

The method includes a step of administering a pharmaceutical preparation containing at least 10% Factor IXa (mg/mg total protein). The Factor IXa can be produced by proteolytically activating recombinantly-produced Factor IX. The invention also provides a method for producing Factor IXa from a plasma fraction, which method results in a Factor IXa product containing little or no prekallikrein activity.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for effectively inactivating microorganisms included in a biological fluid, especially a non-transparent biological fluid without preferably having an effect on a target bioactive substance.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a method for determining an effective dose of monochromatic or polychromatic light from one or more light sources to inactivate the microorganisms present in the biological fluid, preferably the non-transparent fluid. Moreover, there is provided a method for inactivating the microorganisms in the biological fluid in a flow-through-reactor. Moreover, the invention provides the useful flow-through-reactor with one or more thermostated light sources. The invention further provides a method of controlling the light sum dose of monochromatic or polychromatic light emitted from one or more light sources to effectively inactivate the microorganisms present in the biological fluid in a batch reactor.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new healing approach for treatment of hemorrhagic diseases.SOLUTION: Disclosed is a healing approach for treating hemorrhagic diseases by using a non-anticoagulant sulfated polysaccharide (NASP) as a procoagulant. The NASP can be dosed to promote an arrest of hemorrhage as a single agent, in assortative combination, or in combination with another drug (for instance, factor VII, factor VIII, or I X factor). Especially, usage of NASP in treating of the hemorrhagic diseases including a congenital coagulation disorder caused by a blood factor deficiency, an acquired coagulation disorder, and a bleeding status caused by an external injury is explained.

The microspheres incorporate antisense (AS) oligonucleotides. The process includes using an antisense approach to prevent an autoimmune diabetes condition in an NOD mouse in vivo and in situ. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system, method and apparatus for performing a renal replacement therapy.SOLUTION: Two small high flux dialyzers (20, 30) are connected in series. A restriction means (40) is placed between the two dialyzers in the dialysate flow path (962). The restriction means is variable and adjustable. The restriction means builds a positive pressure in the venous dialyzer, causing a high degree of intentional backfiltration. That backfiltration causes a significant flow of dialysate through the high flux venous membrane to directly flow into the patient's blood. The backfiltered solution is subsequently ultrafiltered from the patient from the arterial dialyzer. The diffusion of dialysate into the venous filter and removal of dialysate from the arterial dialyzer causes a convective transport of toxins from the patient. Additionally, the dialysate that does not diffuse directly into the patient but flows across the membranes of both dialyzers provides a diffusive clearance of waste products.

SOLUTION: The fluid dispensing machine, such as a peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis machine, includes a dispenser or cassette (3) that pumps a medical fluid for dialysis or other treatment for patients. The machine includes and uses an autoconnect device (5) for connecting containers of liquid, such as bags of dialysis fluid or medication fluids, to the machine, while maintaining the sterility of the connection. The autoconnect device removes the cap from the fluid bag tubing and pierces the sealing membrane on the tubing. This makes it easier for patients to receive treatment, especially home treatment. The invention further provides a method for identifying coumarin derivatives, and also claims VKORC1 polypeptides and VKORC1 nucleic acids containing a sequence abnormality associated with a VKORC1 associated deficiency such as warfarin resistance. The VKORC1 polypeptides and VKORC1 nucleic acids can be used for diagnosing these deficiencies. Moreover, the invention relates to methods for identifying coumarin derivatives usable in pest control of rodents.
