PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dye material and a light absorbing material having long term storage stability by efficiently using phycobiliprotein contained in blue algae. SOLUTION: The dye material includes an extracted substance of blue algae, which contains phycobiliprotein, and polyethylene glycol. One example of the blue algae is Aphanothece sacrum. In this case, Aphanothece sacrum contains, as the phycobiliprotein, phycoerythrin and phycocyanin. As the polyethylene glycol, for example, a reactive polyethylene glycol is used and allowed to bond to the phycobiliprotein to modify the protein. A process for purifying a composition comprising: i) an encapsulated pigment comprising a pigment and an encapsulant material comprising a cross-linked dispersant; ii) a liquid medium; and iii) free dispersant; said process comprising removal of at least some free dispersant from the composition using a membrane having a molecular weight cut-off of 3 to 30 times the weight average molecular weight of the dispersant prior to cross-linking, with the proviso that all of conditions a), b) and c) are met: a) the pigment is not silicon dioxide; b) the cross-linked dispersant is not cross-linked polyethyleneimine; and c) the cross-linked dispersant is not a dispersant which has been cross-linked with bis-ethene,1,1′-[methylene bis(sulfonyl)].

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation method of carotenoids, a separation method of astaxanthins, and a separation method of astaxanthin fatty acid esters and astaxanthin, which are industrially effective and stable. SOLUTION: The carotenoids and preferably the astaxanthins are separated from a raw material containing the carotenoids by using a porous organic polymer particle consisting of a (meth)acrylic acid ester based crosslinking (co)polymer as a solid phase in a liquid chromatography having the solid phase and a moving phase, and further the astaxanthin fatty acid esters and astaxanthin are separated from a raw material containing the astaxanthins by a liquid chromatography using the porous organic polymer particle. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique enhancing safety as food by extracting a plant dye essence by an extraction method using a dehydration-concentrated lactic acid in place of ethanol. SOLUTION: The technique includes a dehydration-concentrating step (1) of obtaining an extract of plant dyes using, as an extraction solvent, a concentrated liquid having a dehydration-concentrated lactic acid and its oligomer by heating up L-lactic acid under reduced pressure gradually in an inert gas atmosphere, a mixing and extracting step (2) of mixing a plant with the dehydration-concentrated liquid, a separation step (3) of separating an extraction liquid obtained in the mixing and extracting step from a residue, an extraction liquid recovery step (4) of obtaining a supernatant liquid obtained by removing a precipitate of a dye extraction liquid obtained in the separation step, an extraction liquid powderizing step (5) of neutralizing the dye extraction liquid and obtaining a powder by freeze-drying, and a separated residue neutralization treatment (6) of neutralizing the separated residue by a sieve and allowing it to be reutilized.
